Doesn't matter if you live out in the country!
We moved out here "to the country", after we had a neighbor complain about us
cooking hot dogs on a fire in our backyard in the suburbs.
I've had the police at my door TWICE in the last six months, once for a neighbor complaining about
our dog, and...
Our ducks didn't use their house, they join my bantams in their coop at night!
But they do love this shelter we built for them...it's just stacked haybales,
with a twig roof.
See on my blog...www.stackedstonefarm.blogspot.com
I give them fresh water a few times a day, and they come to the back...
Pancake mix!
I gift it with a whisk, dried fruit or pie filling, "Dream Whip" mix, and local maple syrup,
all in a basket.
Great little gifts too, for teachers, mailmen, etc.!
Just put in a ziploc, then into a little gift bag, tie on a mini whisk & add dried cranberries to the mix for the...
I've read that there is a natural "bloom" on the eggs, a protective
layer that seals the outside. When you wash off the bloom, you force
bacteria on the outside into the inside of the egg. (Eggs are permeable, and
allow air, etc. to pass through - chicks have to breathe ya know!)
This is why...
So, if I cross my New Hampshire ROO with my Barred Rock HEN, I get BLACK SEX-LINK chicks,
and if i cross my New Hampshire ROO with a Salmon Faverolle HEN, I get RED SEX-LINK chicks,
is that right?
Sounds easy enough! A great way to determine how to sell them in spring!
I think it really depends on situation, and the owners.
We have 2 cats right now, indoor/outdoor - during the day they can go out,
but they come in at night (OWLS!).
They like being out in nice weather, but if it's raining/snowy/cold, they stay inside.
We live on a country road, not lots of...
We started lots of birds this year, and I'm loving the Plymouth Rocks. They are
almost 4 months now and are HUGE! I'm sending the extra roos to get freezer-ready
next week. The Rock-cross Mutt Roo I have is the biggest, I'd say about 10 lbs.
currently, but I'm saving him to breed my meat...
Hi there!
We had 10 Cornish X in an A-frame chicken tractor made from scrap boards and chicken wire. (about 8' long)
The meat birds poop so much, we liked to move it every day. We put tent stakes on the corners, through
the chicken wire, to keep it from being lifted by hungry scavengers! We...
P.S. I'm in NY too, the shipping was cheapest from Hoffman's.
(I researched for a while!)
The order went in Monday, chicks arrived on Wed., so only 1 day
in transit. FYI!
HI!
Got 100 silver cross cornish from Hoffman Hatchery in PA, only
had 1 DOA. They're doing great! 100 chicks with shipping was $101.50.
Great way to fill the freezer! Very happy with Hoffman's.
I've heard Meyer is excellent as well, if you get on their mailing list they will
send you weekly...
I've done Barred Rocks, New Hampshires, Cornish X, Australorps, & Auraucanas this year.
All started the same age, in early April. The Cornish X, of course, grew fastest, but the Rocks grew almost
as quickly and now they're HUGE! I'd love to try the Brahmas next year, looks like they get almost...
Hi ALL!
Got 100 Silver Cross Cornish cockerels from Hoffman Hatchery.
Only lost one in shipping, and the rest are doing great.
Wondering if anyone else has raised these for meat?
I've raised Cornish cross before, butchered at 8 weeks.
They were starting to have trouble moving around at that...
I have a hawk that keeps coming at dusk, and sits on the coop at NIGHT!
He knocked my A-frame sideways, and a chick got out, I found it later with gashes
on its back, trying to nurse it back to health now. I shoo the hawk away, but when I look
out at night, it's back sitting on the...
We're raising Silver Cross Cornish Cockerels for meat, they're about 4 weeks and doing great!
Bought them from Hoffman Hatchery in Pennsylvania, got 100 cockerels (all males) for about $100 WITH shipping!
Only lost 1 in shipment. They're eating fine, foraging a bit, we're expanding their pen in...
I'd go with the Barred Plymouth Rocks too!
Great, funny personalities - easy care, the best foragers,
(Mine even get frogs & salamanders from the creek!)
good layers, tasty meat when the Roos get big! Pretty patterns,
fun to breed for selecting, a little broody too.
They'd be my pick!
