I have framed chicken wire windows in my coup with plexi-glass on the outside that I can open and close for venting. I have put dark window covering on the inside to darken the coup. I have heard that chickens like it dark when they lay and mine do lay their eggs the darkest spot in the coop...
I once fed my birds a Tuna Carcass - they looked at it the first day( as it sat in the sun at 90 degrees), I buried it the second day and they dug it up the third day and ate all of the maggots for the next two days then finally finished it off after about a week. YUK!
I wanted to share an article that came out last week. Another "win" for Urban Chicken Lovers.
For now, Eugene Oregon suspends a limit on the number of backyard fowl

I have one hen that only lays this type of egg. I did some research and it seems they are also called rubber eggs, or as my husband calls them paper eggs. It seems that normal chickens lay one every so often when they are new layers. One of my Barred Rock hens just turned a year old and only...
I did a look-up on this very subject and found what is referred to as a "Rubber" egg. My husband said they always called them "Paper" eggs when he was growing up. I have a Barred Rock that will be 1 year old on April 4 that has yet to lay a normal egg. She has only layed one rubber egg a week...

Hmmm....how old was she when you got her? I have a barred rock who hatched on Sept 21st and she laid her first egg 3 weeks ago. After a couple of weeks of letting her body "sort things out" she has become very consistent and has laid every day now for the past week or so.
I got my...
My Austrolorp is very noisy - she yells and squawks runs and jumps for about two hours then finally she will lay her egg. Then she is quiet the rest of the day. The egg seems to have blood colored spots on it. As the eggs dries - the spots turn white? w The wierdest thing I have seen. She...
Thank you everyone for all of the advice on my hen that has a hard time laying. I always have black oil sunflower seeds around for the wild birds. I will try giving my hens some everyday and cross my fingers Thank you all agian! I can't wait to see if it help!:fl:fl:fl:fl
I also have one Austrolorp, her eggs are a little lighter than these, but speckled with some days red splotches and some day white splotches. We think she is lacking lubrication because she runs and "yells" and jumps up on everything and then will finally plop her egg out wherever she is at...
I think wood chips would work great and a lot of places get rid of them for free if you ask. I work at a power company and we love to have people call and ask if they can get our chips. We will even deliver them when we are in their area trimming trees. We have to pay to dispose of them...
From what I've read is the each put off about 10 watts of heat, so I think if their cuddled together they should be fine as long as there are no drafts. They coop needs to be vented, but not drafty. I think your chickens are very lucky to have a carring owner looking after them.
I am new to chicken farming, so I tried to name them with part of their breed in the name so I could remember their breeds.
Rocky - Barred Rock
Lacey - Silver Laced Wyndotte
Road Runner- Road Island Red - My cat grabbed this one and tried running off with it when it was only 6 day's old - but...

My best layer a Golden sex-link started limping last Wednesday. We did the same, looked for a sliver or cut in her little foot, but nothing. She also held it up while standing still. She acted normal other than the limp. By the week-end it was much better, so I assumed...
Here is a photo of our coop right after we got it. We no longer use the little run that came with the coop, it was great when they were small, but as they got bigger, I couldn't stand to see them in the little run.....so they now get 1/2 the yard until we get home from work and then they free...
I live 45 miles up the hill close to the town of Oakridge and have 5 chickens in a small chicken tractor I purchased off Craigs list. We tend to be colder here than in Eugene and I too was worried about keeping the chickens warm at night until I read that each chicken gives of 10 watts of heat...
