Hello, 'we' are Jean & Rodney, and we would like to tell you our story....
We have always loved the outdoors and gardening, and canning is always a pleasure not a job to us so farming animals seemed like a good way to compliment the veggies.
We worked our way into chickens the long way around...
We have 4 RIR hens and a roo and we were getting eggs pretty regular since Oct '09, well pretty regular until about four days ago. We got 4 eggs this past Sunday and then on Mon. we only got 1. Well the weather is pretty cold here and I just attributed the lack of eggs to lack of heat...until...
Something I read in a chicken magazine just a few months ago about sour crop, this was in a UK mag. and the pics were graphic, was after you massage the crop, you need to hold the chicken upside down to let that nasty stuff run out. It was some gross looking stuff. I had no idea at the time we...
I'm so sorry for your loss. When we loose one my DH tries to tell me it's all part of farming, but I still cry.
Look over your dead baby and see if the blood is coming from a wound or out of her.
Contessa,
Everyone here is your best source of information, we also opted to build, because of the high cost of prebuilt, and because we wanted to spend the time together. We researched for plans, bought books, we have as many animal housing books...almost as we do chicken raising books. We...
We swapped our chickens over from Dumor to Layena when TSC first started carrying it and we found that the Layena satisfies our chickens better than the Dumor. We went from 2-50# bags per week to 1 per week. And we also saved when we swapped them over from crumbles to pellets. They are still...
I totally agree, GO for IT!! You have shown good chicken smarts by doing research. The expense, ahhhhh, just eat out less. None of us "Chicken raisers" are going to get rich (financially) raising chickens, but the richness that these birds do bring is immeasurable. We got our first egg on...
I don't know about anyone else, but whether I get no eggs or 20 eggs a day, it feels like Christmas.
Big Congratulations KCNC06.....
Happy belated BD, rirbarredrock...
We understand the trouble with keeping the chickens "cooped"(sorry for the pun), on the really cold days. We decide to get into chickens and we've had one of our worst winters. We have read that the chickens are like kids, they get cabin fever and bored, so to break the bordom, they chase each...
We had the same problem with our BO roo, everyone picked his tail feathers out and all he had was a bloody stumpy tail. We took him out and sprinkled antibiotic powder on it, (the kind you put in their water) and moved him into one of our vacant rabbit pens, (two doors down from the guinea pig)...
We just read in either "Backyard Poultry" or "Practical Poultry" that when a hen gets egg bound that you should use vaseline. They said it's not the nicest job that you have to do to your hen because it is usually better if you go a little up in there with the vaseline. Good luck!!!!
