    Eggshell covered in gritty material

A hen is laying eggs that have what feels like sand on the outside. A fresh laid egg can easy be wiped clean while an egg that has sat for a few hours is covered in hard material - it tends to be in clumps on the egg. It comes off with scrubbing. Only one hen does this. Problem or personal...

    Hen is just "off"

My EE is about 18 months old. Yesterday I noticed she was napping a lot. I have 7 other hens who were up and moving and this one just spent a lot of time sleeping. Today I caught her in the coop and she weighs next to nothing! Her feathers are nice, her vent is clean, eyes are clear, but she...

    White EE = roo?

Oh please ease my mind that my very pale yellow/white EE is a hen and not a roo. I did a quick Google search and that color seems to be more common among the males. Eeek, I had one chick die already and I don't want to give away another...and this is the one my 4 yo daughter picked as hers!

    Size difference

I have 3 EEs and 2 BR chicks this spring. The EEs seem huge. Supposedly they all hatched on 3/8. Are EEs just bigger or are these ones older - by a couple of days or a week? It isn't a major size difference but when you look at the group you can easily pick out the EEs because of size. Thanks!

    Change in egg color

One of my BOs is now laying white eggs. She's always laid brown eggs. What gives? Should I be worried? She is almost 11 months old. No change in feed.

    My hens won't stay home

The fence along the front of the yard is only 4 ft and we cannot make it taller. What can I do to discourage fence hopping? Every morning for the past week I've had to round them up from the neighbors and get them home. Today is the worst - they've gone over the fence 4 times at least...

Whoa! A little psycho while laying?

Only my SS does this. When she is in the nest box she wants to be left alone. If anyone or thing bothers her she fluffs herself up and makes this hissing cackling noise. Hubby refers to her as our velociraptor *lol* She reminds me of the lizards the have the collars around their necks that...

    "Tough" eggs?

I've noticed there is a tough inner membrane to the eggs my hens lay. I crack the eggs and then feel like I should get a chisel. What is causing this? It seems to be all of them.

BIG egg! *** UPDATE ANOTHER one today!!!!

One of my BOs is an overachiever tonight. She laid a 2.5 oz egg! I weighed a large store egg for comparison - it came in just shy of 2 ozs.

    Oh where oh where?

Is my EE hiding her eggs??? ARGH! She decided to lay in the ivy, those I found. Well now she's moved on to greener pastures. Haven't seen an egg from her in a week. I really don't want to crawl under the deck to look. Dang kids have hid the flashlights too. It's a conspiracy I tell ya...

    Difficulty with egg laying

Last night I was quite concerned about my BA. She was sitting away from the flock for quite awhile. I went and picked her up and put her in the coop - this is normally a bird that RUNS from me. She sat in the nest box for a bit but seemed completely out of it - eyes dilated, breathing slow...

    "Dazed" hen?

My BA is just not her normal bossy self today. She's been sitting away from the others and hasn't come running when I've gone out. She looks like a she dazed or drugged. I picked her up, not normal at all, and put her in the hen hotel to check her. Her pupils are very dilated and her...

    Yawning?

I noticed one of my hens opening her beak repeatedly, like she was yawning. What is the purpose of this? Something stuck in her throat?

    Dusty feathers

I just went out to check my hens - it's hot here - and they came out of their favorite shady spot. Once on the concrete my SS decided to shake the dust out of her feathers. She left a ring around herself on the ground! Those feathers can sure hold a lot of dirt. She probably lost a pound by...

Is it possible for a hen to never lay?

Waiting on my Blue Andalusian to lay her first egg. Descriptions of the bird say they are early layers. Well, all the other hens have laid at least once. Is it possible for a hen to never lay? I'm beginning to think I have a roo in hen's "clothing"....

    Swallowed a grape whole?!?!

I tossed a few overripe grapes out to my hens and the BA gulped down two whole. Is that ok?

5 hens - 2 have been laying for 2 weeks, what about the rest?

Has you ever had your hens been spaced out when it comes to starting to lay? My EE and SS started 2 weeks ago and lay every other day. The BA and BOs haven't done squat...heck, they don't even squat *lol* I would that that once one got going that the others would follow suit sooner than...

    I'm the roo?!?!

When I got to pet my EE she immediately squats. I walked by her tonight and she squatted. I'm her roo now? Oh brother *lol*

Egg song but no eggs - what gives?

My SS laid her first egg on Thursday and nothing since. She sings rather loudly each evening but no more eggs. For all the commotion you think that something had happened. Is she just a boastful hen? My EE laid her first egg on Thursday too but no song. Normal for the breed or is she an...

    WOOHOO First egg!

Laid by the baby of the group, go figure. Diego is 2 weeks younger than the rest of the flock but it's easy to tell its her egg - it's blue! Now if she will just make her deposits in the nest box from now on and not on the floor of the coop I found her in the coop by herself this morning and...
