BQ hen, new layer, constipated from calcium grit?

It's a common misconception that vit d comes from sunlight - the UV radiation we are exposed to just activates it/changes it (I don't know the science behind it lol) so that it becomes usable to our bodies, so we do need to take it in in our diet first. Most people and critters eating a natural...

    quail sizes

Yes the guy on that site is here too, he's in on the Tatanka breeding with Moby... Interesting to hear about the truth with those white meat quail - I never believed it, personally! I am obviously mistaken about "harlequin" quail - I assumed Harlequin quail was another name for the...

BQ hen, new layer, constipated from calcium grit?

Ground up eggs shells work good too! I think I have used mashed up calcium pills in a pinch at one point too. I wonder if there is anything in it than would be hazardous to birds... I always worry about the vit. D in it, too much of any fat soluble vitamin can be bad for any living creature and...

BQ hen, new layer, constipated from calcium grit?

I think that quail in the wild would utilize grit more because of the type of stuff they are eating. In captivity the food we feed them is ground up already, just add water and it turns to mush. I think it would be okay to offer it to them once in a while, but not enough to allow them to pig out...

BQ hen, new layer, constipated from calcium grit?

Technically the only birds that should be getting grit at all are birds that eat whole seeds. If a quail is on layer crumbles or processed feed of any kind, it should not have grit, as they can gorge on it and become impacted, which can be fatal. This goes for budgies too - budgies shell their...

+1 on the turkey starter too, I cannot get game bird feed at my local store so I have always used turkey starter with great success.

Bobwhite - finding unmedicated feed - HELP!!!

medicated feed will not hurt them at all. If anything, it will help prevent coccidiosis and result in increased chances that your birds will make it to adulthood. I always feed my chicks on medicated feed. If it were me I would be panicking if I couldn't find any LOL but then again I have a...

Just joined the world of quail! Injured bird - update

do you know how many males and females you have? Might be that there are too many males for the amount of females you have and they are scrapping. Should ideally be 1 male for at least every 3 females in a colony, I find 1 in 5 worked well for me, no scrapping but still high fertility. I also...

    What type of quail?

I'm not a fan of boiled eggs, but I love pickled quail eggs! The perfect amount of egg white and yolk in every bite. Here is video I did earlier this year on how I pickle my quail eggs: (these are coturnix eggs - they would be my choice for egg producers too)

    Hi, new to Quail :)

From my experience, most buttons are pretty spazzy too, I don't care for them much. I think a Bob would eat a button for breakfast lol. If he is young and has no face stripes yet, a male should still have more blackish-gray on his head stripes than a female. Here is a photo of a 9 week old male...

oh and do they use the ramp to get into what I assume is a little house at the top? I always wondered if coturnix were inclined to use a ramp like that but never tried it.

Yeah to stay on the safe side I would keep the quail cage somewhere else than in your chicken pen - a shed or something or prop it up on stilts so it sits waist level with you. I like to attach mine to the side of a building if I can.

Feed Coturnix Quail Chicken Lay Crumble?

I always used 17% chicken layer crumbles as that's what I was told when I started out, and got great production, but it seems like the higher protien stuff is highly reccomended now so that's what I'll be using when I start my flocks up again.

    I want quail

The stickies on this site are a really great place to start off! Quail are tons of fun. I used to sell craptons of eggs at the Farmer's Market until the food inspectors stuck their nose in and made it virtually impossible. They are notorious for just wanting to ban people from doing things...

Quail Still Ding after all your suggestions.

Sometimes just getting a chill once can lower their immune system so much that they pick something up that otherwise wouldn't have bothered them. At this point i think you only have a couple birds left. If it were me I would cull them and start over with a new batch. Spray that brooder out...

First Attempted Quail Hatch: Went BADLY!

aww that sucks! I would also agree that the package was not handled nicely, some of them look shaken up. I would also wonder how long them spent in transit? Sometimes eggs that are a little old don't develop well either. I have found that packages I send and recieve have much more respect given...
