Hi folks, I haven't been around in a while but now I think I have a problem. My hens are happy enough as far as I can see. I feed them layers pelletts and leftovers from the table once a day. They seem to be pecking each others feathers, so much so that around the bottom some of them are red and...
Hi folks, still getting 6 out of 6 and some of them quite big and the bigger ones mostly have double yolks. Has anyone else experienced this? and can you explain why?
Thanks
Pat
Hi folks, finally had my 6th hen lay today. It's now two month and a day since they arrived and today is the first day I've had 6out of 6 hens lay. I'm delighted with it and thought I'd share.
I did think that the last one was a dudd as it was taking her so long to lay. After all they were 20...
Thanks for your replies once again peeps.
Lovely to know the Irish are around, sure isn't Boston where the Kennedys (as in JFK) settled first !
Anyway back to the hens
I'm not so worried about then now as I know they will eat when they're hungry enough. They're doing fine and I had 5 out of 6...

DUDE! According to Mr. Whatdacluck's info, he's from Contae Loch Garman (County Wexford), so he's not a dude, he's a BUACHAILL!
My chooks also kick all the pellets out of their feed trough; it's just the nature of these creatures, who are "wired" to scratch the earth for seeds, bugs...
Hi everybody.
When I got my hens first, all I gave them was the layers pellets. Then I started to give them some table leftovers. They were running to the door of their run as soon as they saw me and looking for food. I then gave them bread mixed with milk and mashed up, so now they don't seem...
Thanks peeps, really appreciate the good wishes.
Well I had the first egg yesterday 22nd Aug 2010 and another today. The eggs are brown so I presume they are from a red hen. As far as I'm aware the LH which are black, will lay white eggs??? I think that's what I read anyway. It would also...
Well 2 weeks and four days later, one of my hens has laid it's first egg... waahey!!!!
I was out this morning and when I came home some of the hens were on their roosts in the coop... unusual for this time of day I said, but had a hunch there was something going on. I checked the nest box about...
Hi folks, I have my pullets 2 weeks tomorrow. I feed them layer pellets as per norm. In the last week I have given them some table leftovers ie; potatoes, peas, porridge (no sugar)
the usual leftovers from dinner. Now everytime they see me they run to whatever part of the run I am, and when I...
Thanks everyone for your help with my query, and indeed your kind comments on my photography (photography is another hobby of mine)
@ Melissa... I have them 11 days and the poultry farm said they were 19-20 week pullets.
@ Mahonri... I made that feeder myself yesterday. Cut a Wavin pipe in...
Could anyone tell me why some of my hens have a shorter upper beak than othere??? see photos.
Some of my friends are like this also. The ones that have it are RIR strain.
Thanks.

Thank you one and all for replying to my query, you have all confirmed what I thought. Yes I thought the sugar was the cause of this.
@ Keens2050 or Heather (hope you don't mind I looked up your profile) So you're Irish! ah sure that's just great. I'm from Co Wexford. I love Ireland...
Wow!!!! all this congrats, it's new to me:)
I suppose I might as well get in on the act though:cool:
I got my first 6 hens on Wednesday 4th August, they are supposedly 19-20 weeks point of lay pullets.
I have them 8 days now and no eggs. To be honest I can't wait for them to lay, I think it...

Hi and thanks for the reply.
I have 6 hens. 2 of them Leghorns that are not friendly at all or are very scared. The reds are a little better.
A friend of mine got 3 red hens and they are extremely friendly. We both got the same age hens and from the
same breeder. I have come to the...

@ jayne... "the girls" are 19-20 week old 'point of lay' pulletts... well that's what we call them here in Ireland.
They are settling in nicely and I hope to have eggs in the next...
