    Best brown egg layer...

Quote: I have three homegrown black sex links and they are laying machines. They lay nice BIG brown eggs, so big in fact that it's often hard to close the egg cartons They've been laying close to a year and the eggs are still huge.

    hens not laying

I like the "get more hens" suggestion. No matter how many I have, I always think to myself, "yea, but wouldn't a (*insert breed here*)be a nice addition to the family? If you figure out a way to get them to lay more, please let me know. out of 16 hens, I am currently getting two eggs a day.

    Layers on Strike. What's wrong?

I'm not willing to put lights on my birds. I know it's a common thing and I don't fault any one who does it, but it's not for me. I thought i might be the heat. This past week has been the first time it's gotten over 90 in Southside Va. But this has been going on most of the summer...since...

    Layers on Strike. What's wrong?

I just don't know what else to do. My girls have really slacked off on their egg laying. I've done everything I can think of. I found one hen infested with mites. A week ago I dusted her, the rest of the flock, the coop, changed all the nest boxes to fresh bedding, cleaned the run and coop and...

    Snake in the coop

Ducklove, I love the way your cats are looking at it, like "Can we have it, Daddy, huh pleeeeaaaassse?" Only good snake is a dead snake. That's just me.

    Mites...Oy!

So now I am confoosticated. The treatment for the two types of mites is different. The common one calls for treating the coop primarily, the other kind calls for primarily treating the birds. How do I know which one I have?

    Mites...Oy!

So, I have these dark colored bugs-very very small ones-climbing on me. I just came in from tucking my birds in. Mites? They look almost like seed ticks, but smaller and they appear to be black. Should I dust myself with sevin? I can dust the birds and the coop without much fuss, but will they...

    Apples

My husband and I have been canning apples and we've been giving the girls the peels but not the cores because of the seeds. I know that one apple's worth of seeds won't be a problem, but how about a bushel's worth? I have 21 birds right now.

    Snake eating almost-hatched eggs?

I don't know, but based on the fact that I had a snake on my front porch eating my mud thatches two nights in a row, I am moving my broody out of the garage and into the kitchen tonight. There's no more mud thatch hatches for the snake to eat, and that snake is going to come tonight looking for...

    Snake trap?

Giant water snakes!?!?! Oh please Lord, tell me you do not live in Virginia I'm sorry you're losing birds and eggs. I hate snakes. I've found that the best way to deal with them is with honey. It works like this: "HONEY!!!! THERE'S A SNAKE! KILL IT!!!!" Works for me every time.

Had Cat in Coop, warning shot gone wrong, HELP!

Quote: Some one needs to call National Inquirer. You could make a lot of money of that is the truth. OP-I can only reiterate what's already been said: Have no further contact with these neighbors! Get an attorney for both the cat issue and especially the land issue! Your neighbors are...

my chickens don't like people :(

Maybe you should package meal worms and sell them under the brand name "Chicken Crack". That'd be right funny. I'd buy it!

Oh......I kinda messed up. Sorry chickies.

That would never happen at my place Y'all believe me, right? Half the time, my chickens can't remember where the door to the run is when I open it to let them wander around the yard. I predict that this morning, the chickens have already forgotten all about the trauma of the day before.

    Dual a doodle do's? Or Cockadoodle Doo-Off?

I have a big coop that has 15 hens and one roo. Then I have the pre-freezer-camp-holding-area which currently houses seven 15-20wk old roos. These two fenced in areas are about one yard apart. This morning while feeding & watering, I heard one of the young boys "crow". Then a second one went...

I have two silkie hens. With two hens, I always have one who is broody, usually both are broody. I would vote for the silkies! Plus...they are really really sweet birds
