I took some pix of my pumpkin pavlovskaya hen yesterday. She's skittish and always stays close to the flock, especially near our ayam cemani rooster. She is almost 2 1/2 yrs old and lays a small cream egg every once in a while.
Just went to check on them and the poor chicks were sitting out by themselves, one with a peck wound....so now they're under a heat lamp. Reluctant mothers, these d'uccles!
My d'uccle (2yrs old) and d'uccle/Sultan (1yr) hens hadn't been broody ever until last month. 1 tiny chick hatched today from a dozen or so that they've been sitting on. It appears that the 2 d'uccle/Sultans are caring for it while the other sits on the rest, although they walked away from it...
I love cross-breeds!
These are two of my sultan/d'Uccle mixes -- from a runty but beautiful white sultan bantam roo and a d'Uccle momma that is either white, porcelain, or mille fleur. The black/white hen was born in April, and the lemon blue roo in June. I still need to name them! I lost a few...
I'm wondering how I ended up with a lemon blue color in this roo (no crowing, yet, pretty sure it's a roo) that hatched from a d'Uccle egg in July. I had one white Sultan bantam roo, and the d'Uccle hens I have are porcelain, white, and mille fleur. Which hen could it have been?
This is...
Thank you! Will try your advice. You reminded me that we did get mosquito fish stocked in our lake for free from our County Mosquito Control office a couple of years ago...will see if they will give us more, and if it's still for free!
Wasn't planning on using the granules in the chicken...
Just wanted to share that last week, I placed a shiny spinning pinwheel on the same post where that hawk is pictured (in my post (#47)) and next to it some mirror garland (several 2" square mirrors connected with fishing wire) hanging over the fence. Since then I have not seen or heard hawks in...
I'm wondering about these Mosquito Repellent Granules that I've seen on Amazon and Gardeners' Supply, which claims to be poison free and made of natural oils (lemongrass, mint and garlic oil). Has anybody used this? Do you think it would be safe for chickens if they curiously picked at it? It...
I love hawks. But today I also had my second hawk attack. The first one took my beautiful splash Polish bantam roo in December. Today it was one of the little chicks.
Pretty sure it's this one, looking towards our coop about 25 feet away. It has a nest way up high right above where my chickens...
Your chickie is just adorable. I hope it turns out as sweet as mine. Mine was only flighty when it was bossed around by a bigger roo. Now that he is the only roo, he struts around proudly and the hens (even the standards) just love him.
I now have a handful of half-sultan little chicks, d'uccle...
Yes! I have one now and had another before her.
They are wonderful companions and protectors, and huge! Both are/were around 100 lbs.
Friendly with our cats, chickens, little girls, and visitors. Unrepentant counter surfers and food junkies. Better as inside pets rather than outside yard dogs...

Thanks! I'm so proud of her and her first little offspring born Wednesday...I hope it looks just like her but more silkie! And I hope it's a Jamie Lee!
My little broody bantam cochin/polish Lisa Marie
Lisa Marie with her little d'Uccle/Sultan chicks born this week
Lisa Marie with Patty, her first chick w/ a Polish roo. She is such a good mom, this little chick survived a flash flood that quickly dumped 2 feet of water in the coop during...
