    viability of eggs

Does anyone know if turkey eggs I found would be okay to try to hatch if they have been exposed to temps down to 40 degrees? There are 10 eggs in the nest, and I have 3 hens so they shouldn't be more than a few days old.

It seems we all have the fever!

Tonight when I went out to close up the coop one of my Jaerhon hens was all puffed up in the nest box. Kind of ironic because I just had our first few eggs hatch in the incubator. Not that either of us have our timing right or that she will stay serious. I just thought it was cute since not a...

ooh my humidity is at 78%!

It seems bad, how could it go up so high when I have been opening the 'bator? I will open the vent hole and check in a minute. The relative humidity is higher today so it is easier to get it up there I guess.

What do you want in a breeding Tom?

This year we got started in turkeys. I wanted Bourbon Reds after doing research and found some local almost year old turkeys. The man had no purebred hens, only half BR half BS but that was close enough to start and he did have a nice BR tom. I brought them home and was hooked. Well I...

Can three day olds swim? I mean they can, but should they?

Hey all my new ducklings are doing great but some of them are swimming around in mamas (8'' deep) water dish and loving it. I have read here to not let babies swim, why is that, will they be okay? I keep fishing them out and it does seem like they actually are wet through, is that the problem...

What is your favorite scalding temp?

Well I was not planning on butchering any birds today, but the time is near and I had one starting to look gimpy and not walking around normally so I decided it was time for her to go. Last year when we did the scalding (our first time) I was cautious and used Gail Damerow's suggested temp of...

    Would you take them away?

My ducks began hatching their eggs yesterday! I have never had any offspring born yet on our farm and it is so exciting, but I am a nervous wreck! The two mamas are sharing a nest and now that there are some ducklings born it seems like they are not covering all the eggs anymore, they are also...

Uh oh! There was a feed store special!

Okay I now have four kinds of birds on my farm! The local feed store had a special on pheasants and I thought since my brooder was empty I would try some. I don't know if it was such a 'special' but $1.95 for anything with feathers doesn't seem bad to me. I only got four, I just wanted to try...

Oh man now this!?!!???Tom doesn't look good! Updated, bad news

So this morning when I went out to feed our tom looks bad. He is laying down and that is not normal, he constantly struts and walks around calling and such and today he looks depressed. His head looks a bit pale but his feathers are not bunched up or anything and he did get up and walk around...

    Help! Mama turkeys kidnapped poults!

I knew this would happen but I didn't count on it raining for several days when it did. Mamas hatched their eggs and swiped the poults. I had hopes that they would come looking for a bite to eat after the babes hatched but it seems they stole away to the woods. I really don't want to go...

    just candled, first time!

Well I just candled my ducks eggs. I had been trying to figure out what to do about the difference in ages of the eggs in my ducks nests, they share one and I was concerned that they would all be at different stages. I went through them all and most of them seem to be on the same page. I...

What do you do for a broody with staggered eggs?

I asked this question under someone else's thread and apparently I killed it SO, I'll start over being that some one else was wondering something similar. One of my ducks went broody about 2 weeks ago. She must have been still laying eggs for a while though because when I first checked there...

    Blue vs. Black Swedes

I just realized that in my replies that I said I have blue swedes. I wrote in my signature line that I have black swedes, which is what color they are are but they were sold to me as blue. I know that you get black and blue colors from the blues when you breed them but the lady didn't have a...

Will hens reject their chicks if relocated?

My two mixed turkey hens are setting eggs, not in the best place, but I think they will be fine. I don't want them free ranging with the poults however and wondered if I could round them all up when the eggs hatch and get them somewhere safer. I believe the nests are in a safe enough place to...

    I got my Turkeys today!

I just picked up my Bourbon Red Tom and two mixed breed hens. One hen is rather dark with barred wings and iridescent feathers on her tail and back and the other is mostly dark with red patches on her wings and body. I am hoping that some of the poults will turn out more like the Bourbon Red...

    Would this be counter-productive?

If the goal is to raise heritage turkeys would it be silly to jump start my turkey venture with mixed breeds? I still am going to get Bourbon Red turkeys this year probably 15, but I just found on craigslist a 2 year old BR tom and some year old hens (his daughters) that were hatched by a BLack...

My Jearhons are ordered! Ideal just called! Just checking in!

Ideal just called, they have a hatch date of March 23. I ordered 25 Norwegian Jearhon pullets and 4 cockerels! So excited! I just had to share. Now I have 6 months or so to convince everyone that the white eggs will be just as good as brown ones lol!

Duluth and Northern MN do you want to order thru Ideal?

I am going to place my order soon from Ideal. I would imagine that if a few of us combined orders we could ship our chicks up sooner than April. I have called them and gotten quotes on the Norwegian Jaerhons, CX and Red broilers. I was ordering 50 of each of the meaties @ $1.69 if someone else...

Looking for info on blackhead, I heard it is only in certain areas

Is blackhead a problem everywhere? I had heard that it is not a problem in all parts of the US. I live in northern Minnesota and my place has had chickens on it only for three years. The barn I will be brooding my turkeys has not had chickens in it for two years now. How long can it (I am...

does anyone raise both cx and colored broilers?

I want just make one order, I can accommodate their different needs, raise them seperately. I just don't want to butcher them all at the same time, so I thought maybe it would break up the big day a bit. CX boys first, then the cx girls, RB boys, RB girls, like that. Does that sound...
