Chickens are refusing to switch over to layer feed?

We are new to chickens. We have 3 that we have had since they were 1 day old. They started laying about a month ago. When we got our 1st egg, I bought layer food and started mixing it in with the starter/grower. They are not eating the new food. We tried a different brand, still no. We tried...

17 week red star laid today... do I switch all of them over to layer?

Not sure which of the 3 laid. They currently are on starter crumbles. Do I switch them over now to layer feed even though they are younger than the 24 weeks that the feed store recommended to me? Thank you!

Why is one of my 3 chickens so noisy... not sure how to help her?

Hi, When we first got our 3 chicks (a few days before Easter when they were 2 days old), "Madeline" was very noisy for the first 2 days. She cried on and off, more on than off it seemed. Well, it stopped and we were very relieved. Now, however, she has started up again. She is about 18 weeks...

Didn't realize that dogs eat chickens... will they be okay now or....?

I have 3 chickens that are 15ish weeks old. I have been letting them out in the yard with my 2 dogs since the chickens were 10 weeks old, sometimes supervised and sometimes not so much. So far, the dogs are not bothering the chickens or showing interest in them at all. They will, however, sneak...

    Will my yard stink?

Hi, We have been allowing our 3 chickens to free range in our yard for the last few weeks (they are 11-12ish weeks now). We live in a city, very close to neighbors. In their coop/run, I use pine shavings, just wondering what I should be doing for my yard. Thanks!

What bush/plant would chickens like in their run?

I free range my 3 chickens whenever I am outside and they love to sit in planter boxes eating blueberry leaves. I would like to make planter boxes especially for them to put in their run, but I am not sure what bush/plants would be best. Thank you for any suggestions.

How cold can 9 week old chickens get?

If it's in the 50s at night, do they need a heat lamp? Thank you

Why are my chicks eating anything I use as bedding? Should I worry?

Hi, I have 3 chicks who will be 7 weeks old tomorrow. They won't stop eating the bedding. We have tried pine pellets, pine shavings, and paper towels. Should I be worried? Thank you for any help.

Anyone have wire bottom to coop?

So, in reading about cocci prevention/treatment I saw it recommended that coops have wire bottoms so that chickens aren't in contact with poop. I was wondering if we should modify our coop and if they would really be happy on wire). I can't wire the entire yard area where they will be when they...

Is this safe for my chicks? Using a disinfectant to clean?

We have our chicks in a spare room. We bought a floor covering (roll-out linoleum from Home Depot) to go over the hardwood. I go in and clean up poop about 8-10 times each day (basically whenever I go in to check on them). Anyway, whenever I can't get one up cleanly with paper towels, I spray...

My chicks are sounding an alarm, do I turn back on the heat lamp or...

I turned off the heat lamp today and my 3 chicks are crying, crying, crying. Are they cold or is it the dark? They are in the house where it is 70. I went in to check on them and they are standing under the heat lamp looking up at it. Thanks for any suggestions. I hate to hear them cry. Oh...

Should I still have the heat lamp on if they still seem to like it?

We have 3 chicks who turned 5 weeks today. They are in a spare room in our house that is kept at 70 degrees. I have a 250 watt heat lamp in the room. At what point, do we turn it off? They still sometimes go and sit under it. I worry too about them getting too cold, as they have been sneezing...

Is this CRD? Chronic Respiratory Disease?

I noticed my 4 week old chicks sneezing 4 days ago. I think it's sneezing anyway. It started right around the time when we switched food and the new food is kind of dusty. Could it be that or are they about to get really sick on me? We already did the cocci thing and they seem to have recovered...

Worried....Fighting cocci and now 4 week old chicks are sneezing.

Our 3 Red Star chicks (4 weeks old today) have been on Sulmet for 4 days because of bloody poo. This morning 2 of the 3 are sneezing. Is this a secondary infection? Do I need another medication? They are drinking/eating not as much as they did before getting sick, but they are still doing...

Why do our chicks constantly fly onto our heads/shoulders/backs?

We have almost 4-week old chicks who were very scared of us at first and wanted nothing to do with us. Now, however, they fight over who gets to sit on your head/shoulder. When I bend over to wipe up poop (which I am constantly doing because we are battling cocci), they fly and perch...

Hi, Been reading these forums for a while now and finally registered

Hi Felllow Chicken Owners- We have joined your ranks! Our family got 3 chicks when they were 2 days old. They will be 4 weeks tomorrow. I found bloody poop a few days back, so they have been on Sulmet (today's 1st day at 1/2 strength). We are really really hoping that they pull through because...
