Definitly seperate the first night and slow introduce with the guineas. Evaluate and make decisions as you go. There are two sides to compatability and you don't know what exposure the duckling has had.
I have one guinae running around with the hens and ducks just fine. As long as the...

Shell color will vary. I get light and dark brown eggs from the same hens. The white hens also lay brown eggs.
The FAQ hens and eggs section answers egg color question. https://www.backyardchickens.com/cgi-bin/faq/mojofaq.cgi?cat=1#mojo6
There is a link above for breeds that has...

this is a tricky situation. you run a risk either way. If you open to turn the newer eggs you risk reducing the hatch from the first. If you don't the new eggs may not hatch well. hmmmm
I would turn the new eggs once a day during lockdown. split the risk by only opening / turning...
it is hard to lose eggs, sorry to hear that.
temp was possibly the biggest factor. I lost eggs when my incubator got turned up unintentionally. any temp over 100 is dangerous. low temp will extend incubation period but high temp kills.
try moving them to a cooler area or run a fan in the...

This idea has worked for me:
Try using a small piece of chain link fence or wire fence with 3" openings to section off a small area. Put the starter feed in that area. The new chicks can go in and out but the larger chicks and grown hens can't. The mother doesn't need to get to the...
jettgirl24 -- sorry for your loss, I have been there more than once.
my 8 hatchlings are doing good. here is today's picture.
If is hard to get them all to smile at the same time. lol

my son just asked me if this site is "like facebook for chickens?"

Lockdown = the final three days before hatching day. Your barred rock will take care of it.
If you were using the incubator: you would stop turning the eggs or remove the automatic turner,
fill the water rings, and close the lid until after the first chick needs to be removed.
The...

Dry (low moisture) incubated my last batch and hatched 7 out of 12 with 1 more in shell.
Followed a suggestion from another post, kept water level low for first two weeks.
When I candled my eggs at 15 days I filled bottom rings with warm water. Topped off again at lockdown.
Hope...
update: I have 4 in the homemade brooder and 3 in the incubator, 1 more in shell peeping. started with 12.
I am very happy with this batch. Thanks everone for sharing, it was even more fun this time.
Mine are such a cute mix - 3 blonds, 2 reds, and 2 black (rock/red) mixes. last 1?
Chad...
I got back yesterday and had two chicks in the incubator. I placed eggs on the 12th and 13th. One more hatched last evening and another overnight. Image is of the first two taken while moving to homemade brooder.
Waiting to see how many more. Since most the ones left were placed on the...

My last candling was tonight, looks promising. My lockdown day will be Friday because I will not be home Saturday. The last three days of incubation I do not manually turn eggs. I have stopped turning as early as 17 days if any pipping or self movement occurs. I do like ReikiStar...
I have been successfull with mixed dates before.
If you are turning by hand just turn the latest ones an extra day then go full lockdown.
Don't turn any that break the outer shell or appear to have rocked themselves into a new position.
( If they can move themselves enough to control...
my update: eleven still in play, cannot be sure of four because of dark shells.
I will perform last candling tomorrow night and lock down over weekend. (in step with Pookie_Momma)
It is hard not to check / handle too often but I have gotten better too. (keep holding out jettgirl24)...
Nice group.
I have 12 eggs in now and need to stop adding (addicted).
The hens are laying at 50% due to heat so I am going to do a routine worm treatment (wazine) while egg production is down.
This is not my first incubation but I am no expert. This site has helped answer alot of questions...
I'm in. Just starting a small batch.
6 in yesterday and added 3 more today. These are the last 4 from a large white rooster. Also 3 from young red rooster. last 2 could be from either.
