I agree that without blood or wounds it is very suspicious and you should call the feds to see if they want to pick up the carcass. If your birds are free range it is possible for only one to get the flu, but it's pretty contagious so likely you will see more dead birds within a few days if you...

We finally got our first eggs this week! Yay! Mid winter, no lights, not bad! Update: I kept my nicest Sussex rooster, although he's a lil rough breeding :-P. I also kept 2 of my faverolle roos and they are sweet hearts. Thanks for the advice about mean hens...I'm going to switch my attention...

Agreed, the closer you get to California the better, southern Oregon is just about right IMO :-)

Arum will stay in one place though and animals know better than to eat it, chickens included. so if you only have the one plant and children that won't eat or play with it, it can be a decorative perennial if you maintain it. That nightshade does look yummy...glad your lil one was ok!

looks and sounds like Arum...a pain to get rid of! Don't rototil it, that spreads it. The best thing is to dig up every single plant. It took two seasons to get it out of our yard, but we had tilled the area, not knowing any better...

There really isn't much size difference between the breeds, but I only had 3 favs and like 10 Sussex roos so I was thinking that was affecting my favs already docile demeanor. My Sussex dressed out at 17 weeks at 3.5 lbs. I hardly doubt my best fav would dress out like that since he's so...

Thanks Matt, from what I have read on the different Sussex forums, even the better breeders have small Sussex compared to the apa standard! My birds run around a lot. I'm going to experiment with feed to get their size up. I agree that size needs to be a point of work on this breed, but I'm...

thanks Mickey Lou! I'm trying to raise backyard chickens and I have 3 small girls...it's always a toss up though when meat needs to be on the table and they want a quality show bird for 4-H as well! Lol, hopefully I survive the breeding selection process!

Butchered my first chickens today...they crowed at exactly 16 weeks. I'm probably going to keep my friendliest rooster with nice comb, type etc even though he is mid sized... Taking opinions on this, is it better to go with biggest or friendliest? They are speckled Sussex.

Well I think mine is a boy, so if you are right about his breed, you could breed them if you want. I go to Spfld a lot and wouldn't mind heading out the McKenzie your way...

I had to look up a cream barbanter... :-) do they have grey/black legs? I could be wrong about the slp since he was a freebie I didn't order and had to figure out his breed...I'm not a chicken expert...yet....lol

I like how this one shows his personality, he is pretty friendly, it would make me kinda sad to have to eat him someday...

I don't mind eating them, I just know these silver laced polish do well at show, so throwing it out there ya know. Nice to meet you, thanks for making me feel so welcome :-) it's good to have a few boys to choose from for breeding purposes. I hope to have naturally reproducing chickens, so I...
