    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I finally decided to have two FF buckets, both 5 gallon, and that way one ferments for about three days while I'm feeding out of the other. If you're keeping it drier, then make sure you stir really well. The liquid always moves down, and after that first day if you mix that super moist stuff at...

The iPad has been rock'n the double posts lately. Making me crazy.

I feed once, late afternoon, that way they free range most of the day finding their own food.

I added some calf manna today to up the protein in my FF. I think, in trying to make it healthier, I may have lowered the protein without realizing. I have 18% all flock, and add scratch...but according to the math that lowers my protein way too much. I'm going to keep the protein up for a...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I've noticed a lot of the new people like the one bucket better then the two bucket system. It is a lot easier to get the consistency we want, without draining. It takes me less then five minutes to feed the chickens, and most of that five minutes is walking from the house to the barn and back...

Where do I get fish meal? I've not had an issue with egg laying, all my girls are new layers and I'm getting 5-9 a day from 9. I would like to give them some extra protein though, just to have it in there.

Question for all of you with ducks...my FF is all flock and scratch, is that ok for ducks? I'm really considering Runners, but need to keep everything simple, so I would prefer not to have two different kinds of FF.

I was at Lowes a few months ago and picked up an outdoor floor mat, it has a rubber back. This way I know my floors won't have any moisture sitting on them. Works well. It's just 2x3 I think, but they have bigger ones. Mine has a flower design on the visible side.

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I've been doing the FF for a few months now, and that's how my chickens eat. Some days they attack it and eat all day, other days they walk right past it and head to the dirt. I'm not sure if it's something the FF does for them, but it just seems to be one of the benefits and why we don't go...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I noticed that around the fifth day my FF gets really soupy, and gross. But, after more reading I figured out I need to feed it more dry on about the third day, then it thickens back up.

We had one night that stayed -1 all night, my FF was almost a solid block of ice. I started bringing it back in the house again.

I've been doing ACV in the water for months now, so I'm not really worried about that. I am open to most anything, after others have tried it. I'm pretty sure a case of diarrhea anywhere in the house would not end well. Crying and cleaning up dog poo doesn't sound like fun.

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I'm just not sure soaking dog food would help a dog, like chickens. I worry all that liquid would cause really bad bowel issues, not really an experiment i want to deal with. But, I am open to others results.

Well, I tried to do some kind of research on fermenting dogs dry food, found nothing. Not even one tiny blog about it. So, if you could post your results here, that would be great.

My one bucket bubbles constantly. The wetter it is the more it bubbles, after a few hours of that I add enough dry to thicken it up. My FIL was over the other day and was like, what are you doing now? I always have some weird project going, but seeing me stir a big bucket of slop was one of the...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I have Cochins, and only two of them are having poopy streaks on their booties. I actually brought Smoke in the other day and soaked him in a water bath for a bit to get his rear cleaned, there was just too big of clumps to ignore. I'll end up bringing Boots in in the next few days, because hers...

For your FF all you need to do is "feed" it a little more dry feed. Just keep going with what's in the bucket. If there's no mold you should be fine.

I did the same thing. First batch was small and just enough to feed them all once. The next day I was at walmart looking for bigger buckets. It's so easy you won't find a reason not to do it. Good luck!
