Big X2 here!! I have typed similar at least a dozen times but always delete it.... if you read "My birds directly from Texas A&M line", You can be quiet sure the seller has no clue or straight up lying and not to be trusted!
Soaking them in vinegar a few hrs eats the shell almost gone. Then wash and peel the membrane off like a grape skin..... You will still tear a few where the yolk slid to one side of the white, but your percentage of untorn will go way up.... wash well again after you peel them to tame the...
Id be sure al the plugs were removed. I would also test my hydrometer before I trusted it. They are generally wrong..... here is a simple test.....

No you dont have to cover the wire. But if you put a dish towel or paper towels down it will save alot of mess in your bator.... Might I suggest you research hatching in the up right position..... I hatch in cartons and feel its worthwhile.
****... Sorry to hear that... Don't be too hard on him, I'm sure he feels pretty low about it... Just smack his hand and tell him you're driving the bator for now.... Kinda like raise'n kids ain't it. Ya wonder how they survived YOU sometimes.....
Usually 2 or 3 days..... I would have expected her to stop already...... Maybe she is just gonna settle in and keep right on lay'n! Hope it works out for you.... Bill
The Game bird starter you bought is exactly what you need IMHO... The refuse'n any food that is new goes back to hate'n anything new. Eventually she may love the tuna.... A lot of them love yogurt too. But it takes a while. It sounds like your bird is settling right in.... You realize the bird's...
The oyster shell would be good as grit.... I'm not a "treat" person. But I understand it and in moderation you're not going to hurt her any.... Any bird's eggs will tend to get larger as they age.... It sounds like she may not be a young bird, if that's the case, I would expect her to lay a egg...
Congrats on the new bird! And the first egg!! Coturnix are creatures that hate change... Change = stress in a coturnix world.... They are also usually stressed by "alone".... If I were in your situation. I think I would limit all the stress I could and leave her on the chicken feed. Especially...
The gene that throws a blue egg coturnix is extremely rare. Even in Canada. Its usually tied to silver birds..... There is one breeder in the US that I know of who has them... They are not yet being sold and likely wont be for a year or more..... But they are here and they do hatch!
Yes, pine shavings are what most folks use in a brooder.... When I use shavings, I cover them with a layer of paper towels for the first 3 or 4 days.... Not because they will hurt the chicks but so i can sprinkle feed out on the towels. The new chicks will sleep most of the time. When they wake...
I pinion all my breeders, except coturnix, at two weeks of age. They can still fly a little, get a good hover on and hard to catch on the ground. But they ain't gonna go south for the winter... I just do one wing as a rule....
EDIT TO ADD: never felt the need to pinion a Coturnix...
As said above your bird is a coturnix. It will breed with any other coturnix no matter what color. I believe your bird may have a "dirty linage", as in she or her ancestors came from a pen with mixed colors. Breed her with the colors you like, its fun and thats what its all about..... Just know...
Man I tell ya what..... I aint called Fat Daddy out of irony, like the huge dude with the nick name of "Tiny"....
I am 300 lbs of hungry and if it grills up good, you better watch it close!!!
"Hey man, where'd that pen full of chukar go?"
"Aint seen'em"
I prefer quads of 3 hens per cock bird.... you will see bald spots in your hens after a while but you will usually see that in the roo's favored few hens no matter how many he has..... you dont need flight pens even with bobs..... Only if you plan to use them to train dogs or hunt. Iv raised...
