Eatin'Dirt : So you should trust "some chicken breeder" instead.....??? There is NO breeders here in southern NV You should trust a reputable breeder. Plenty of folks out there just breeding their hatchery bought birds. As for NV, pretty sure there are plenty. You just gotta research. Look...

Eatin'Dirt : Is McMurry a good place to buy these old breeds? No. Definitely no. Most of them, McMurray does not offer (and if they do, they're lying or crossbred) - The breeds they do are so far from the old standard and origin type, it is sad.

For every time someone mentions they have Malgache, I'm that much more tempted to get some. . . . But I really have to get some experience with these Shamos first. . . Our climate is quite likely NOT Malgache friendly but I'm willing to put in some $$ for such amazing breed to have a little more...

Quote: Only wish I had a big breeding program. In time, we'll add more pullets and another stag or two, but for now it's just the pair. I'm finding myself very picky about how the Shamo must look in order for me to purchase it or its relatives.

Murray McMurray does indeed have the oldest stock among hatcheries, but hatcheries breed solely for production, so much of the Redcap's original purposes are now gone. You're likely to get underweight birds with bodies far from the standard, combs not matching the breed's unique comb trait, and...

I really love seeing someone dedicated to such rare breed. I just REALLY hope you find some non-hatchery birds out there. The search is very much needed and worth it. I've heard reports of a Redcap showing up at the Ohio Nationals a year ago. . . I'm sure there's some worthy, old, and true to...

Shamos have normal sized wings like any other chicken. I'm sure they can, umm, sort of fly. . . But most of the time they just make really well calculated jumps. As for fences. . . Mine fully respect a 4 ft fence, but can jump over something 2 feet tall.

Quote: Yes, and it is preferred they have a roost at about 2 feet, maybe 3 feet. Especially with younger birds, a perch too high can injure them. Their long legs shouldn't receive such shock when they land, especially while they're still growing. They could hurt themselves, or worse, break a...

Quote: My thoughts exactly. If there's something I really notice with Wheaten males, it is that they have way too little red on the shoulder, too much red in the secondaries, and not enough along the back. At least, the Wheatens I've seen. Honestly I think there's a lot of e+ floating around...

Quote: Which is why I said there are colors and they do breed true. Yes, I've heard of a lot of odd colors popping up, in fact most people will admit even Wheaten can throw some random Dark Shamos, but in general it does breed true most of the time. My Shamo pair came out 100% Wheaten along...

Quote: But it is; the egg song is a mating call. The hen is telling any males in the area that *right now* would be a great time to get over and commence to courtin', as this is the best chance his sperm is going to have to reach an ova without having another egg in the way. In addition to...

Quote: The one on the right looks kind of white because it has a lot of calcium pockets in it, making it shiny and light in color. Shamos do come in different colors and most of the time do breed true. The recognized varieties are Dark, Wheaten, and Black, but they also come in colors like my...

I'm getting superb fertility from mine, and their odd bodies don't get in the way of mating. They lay a normal, medium sized light brown egg. These are the first two eggs I got from my pullet some time ago:

Quote: They don't lay very many eggs, but so far my pullet has given me 14 eggs in 16 days, through both snowy and rainy weather. They're excellent, protective mothers, but I do hear from some people that they're not the best at actually brooding over eggs due to the long legs. I have yet to...

It is true indeed, but not too common. I believe at 30 is a normal. My stag is only 25 inches tall, last I measured him. (a few weeks ago) He's got a lot ahead of him.

I'm not a show person (yet) but I do believe in the SOP. Yes, a bird doesn't have to be Miss (or mister) Chicken of the Country, but one at least should adhere to the standard of the breed. If not, then what is it? A mutt? An unrecognized fowl? There is a difference between a Silver Laced hen...
