3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Wow, Beth, beautiful! I'm jealous! My poor chickies are 1/2 flooded right now in make shift coops. The only NYD chicks I rehomed were my 2 mixed color silkies. My Catdance silkies and Bargain Marans will stay until they've had a chance to grow out and I decide what to keep.

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

I already miss the auctions! Especially since I checked my Bad Azz silkie eggs yesterday. This has NEVER happened to me..... but I candled every egg and to my total shock, every single egg showed development. Shipped eggs! Sent just after Christmas. I am not saying I'll get 100% hatched...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Quote: I was just pondering, but for me, shipped eggs take 3 or 4 days, and don't we have to set them on Tues the 24th? People usually mail on Mon or Tues, so my eggs would maybe get here on Thurs or Friday, 2 or 3 days too late (or else 3 or 4 days too early if mailed the week before.) Or...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

I have been using electric net fencing for a couple years and love it for my large layers. Actually, it's no longer plugged in and still keeps them in. It's very affordable and much easier to put up than a traditional fence or run. It's great to be able to move them around also. The net has...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Quote: Don't feel bad. I was trying hard not to help any this time around but I ended up helping 3 and they are all now healthy and doing great. On the other hand, I had been hearing beeping then nothing. I finally candled and could tell the chick had gone into the air cell. I put it in a...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Quote: Linda, Good luck to you, I have some that will go to lockdown Thursday so I'll be right behind you. I have others that will are about 5 days behind that. My first staggered hatch. I've had to toss a ton from those 2 batches already I keep thinking "I'm done" with the NYD hatch...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

I figured out who was beeping at me early this morning. It was another Bargain Marans. I gave it a little help since DH and I are leaving the house for several hours and I wouldn't be here if there were problems later. I'm going to let it dry and fluff up in the bator until we get home...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Quote: Cielo, my first chick this time around hatched a full day before any of the others. It's hard to be patient with so many over achievers out there but just hang in there. I also didn't get my brooder set up and warmed until I had 4 chicks hatch. They are in a brand new over sized...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

I still have hatching going on too. So far 5 of my Bargain Marans are in the brooder. I don't see pips or activity on the other 5 that made it to lockdown but I'm hoping to wake up to more Marans in the morning. I have 12 CatDance silkies in the brooder and another about 1/3 zipped. Still...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Quote: Tazo Zen hot green tea. Super hot and sweetened if you like it. It is very soothing and all the antioxidants really help. I totally swear by it after nothing else helped me about 6 years ago. I was sick for over a month and had gone through 2 rounds of antibiotics and was nearly...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Well, I may give it a try but I'm going to give my remaining eggs a couple days. Tried a homemade incubator when I was a kid. Have no recollection of where the eggs came from but they rotted and exploded BLECH! That might be why I've hesitated on the eggtopsy procedure. I always hate...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

I just combined eggs that were set 5 days apart so I can put today's eggs in a LG that is already heated and ready to go. Now I just need to remember which ones to put on lockdown and which to leave in a turner on Thursday. I've never done staggered hatches before. More eggs coming in a...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Quote: I was wondering if you could free-range them. I wonder if one of the "fenceless dog collars" would work to keep them from roaming too far. Sure, you try the dog collars and let me know how that works. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/34566_bully-3.jpg What a darling...
