I get the nostalgia thing. That's why I always let a hen or 2 set every year. That protect from a hawk thing probably is a dream.....or a fantasy.

Just out of curiosity, why would such a bird appeal to you? I have some White Japanese Bantams that require me to gather eggs daily. If I leave 2 eggs in a nest they go broody. For me this is not desireable. I do most of my hatching in an incubator so I'd rather they kept laying. I can produce...

I saw a Barnvelder coop tag in PA this summer-unfortunately the bird didn't make it. Too bad, I was looking forward to seeing the first one I'd seen in years.

The problem with the ALBC's classifications is with their data collection [also true of the SPPA]. They make their determinizations based on polling of their members only. In other words if only 2 ALBC members respond that they raise a particular breed the classification decision would be based...

Funny about that "too many eggs" thing. When saving eggs to incubate viability drops off sharply if you keep them more than 10 days. However, a hen may lay for 2 weeks or more before taking to the nest & many of those older eggs will hatch. Can't compete with nature.

There was one White Giant [that wasn't Giant at all] & no Blacks. If the Giant Club has the same President he did a few years back I haven't seen him at a show up here in quite some time.

and she was a very pleasant lady. Had a nice conversation that kept being interrupted by peole wanting feedback on their birds. Both shows went well. I was pleased to see that many of the same birds made it up front on both days but in some cases it was an obvious choice. I judged the Americans...

I'm with you. My culls go to a local auction where they're rarely identified by breed & never associated with the person who consigns them. I get rid of birds I don't need & get back some money toward the feed bill. Generally the people who attend this auction are just looking for chicken. The...

Hate to have to think of myself as an old timer but the calendar doesn't lie. My advice on the bird in question would be keep him a little longer to see what happens as long as you can spare the room he's taking up. Haven't ever raised Buckeyes but have known Reds to carry their tails low 'till...

I've watched this ongoing exchange with a sense of bewilderment. You come on this board out of nowhere, noone knows who you are or what, if anything, you've accomplished in the poultry world & for some reason you decide to pick a fight with Walt. Walt's a Master Breeder & is regarded by many as...

You're right, he does. I've seen them at his place & judged them in shows. They're as good as you'll find anywhere. I saw a pen of about 60 of his pullets one time & they looked like they came off a Xerox machine.

Since the question was about breeding "fixing" the duck-foot isn't a solution as it does nothing for the gene that caused it. My understanding is that duck-foot is difficult to breed out & is highly transmitable. My advice would be to cull the bird. IMO there's never a good reason for breeding a...

Nice bird! As well as the feather width you can see she's got good width & depth of body. Too bad about Don. lost a great breeder & a genuinely nice man. Clerked with him a couple of times years ago & learned a lot about Sebright, Hamburgs & call Ducks.

I would agree with the proviso that outcrossing needs to be done carefully, with a purpose in mind & with careful record keeping & rigid culling. The outcrossing that often gets talked about here rarely produces desireable results, that being the buy a hen here & a cock there & see what happens...

Apparently some people thought I was serious about this-guess I should have added a smiley face. People on this site are forever insisting that a "good roo" will fight off preditors attacking the flock. This is, of course, ridiculous. The "good roo" that tries will just be the first chicken...
