I caught my JG Leila in the big girl nest box today--woohoo, no more poopy eggs laid on the coop floor anymore. I built these huge nest boxes specifically for her and all the other hens immediately started to use them, but she had always laid on the floor until now ;)
She continues to lay on the coop floor. She has created a nest in the shavings and hunkers down there. It's funny how small she looks when she is nesting. She gets very... compact.
I'll be sad if/when Blanche stops laying next winter. She's my girl, I don't want her to get old.
Leila the JG is *finally* laying! I think she is 10 months old. She laid a rubbery shelled egg 2 days ago, a really bumpy misshapen egg yesterday, and today's was perfect and large. Yay! I built giant nest boxes to make her comfortable a couple of months ago, but she chooses to lay on the...
I know she would fit in my current boxes, but since I have the opportunity to make them whatever size I want, I figured I might as well accommodate Leila :).
She started to roost a few days ago finally! The three black hens all roost together (JG, BCM and BSL), and the other five roost...
I am in the process of planning, building a nest box for my new coop. My JG isn't laying yet, but when she does I assume she will need a bigger box than my other 7 hens. (See signature for breeds). Can I build just one big box and the rest standard size, or should they all be the same size...
I don't think so based upon what I've read. I wouldn't know from experience, mine hasn't started to lay yet. She is about 9 months old. The food to egg ratio is high. If you are keeping hens for eggs, I think there are much better choices. (My best layers are a white leg horn and a red...
My coop opening is standard sized (it was a kit coop, I'm not sure of the measurements, maybe 11 x 13). My JG isn't laying yet, but I think I"ll make bigger nest boxes soon. Wynette said hers are 18 x 18, but I don't know how tall. My current nests are 13 x 13. I think the JG would fit, but...
Red sex link, buff orp, white leg horn. The white leghorn and sex link are full grown. The Jersey Giant is about 6 months old here.
She's a little older here, her wattles are bigger ;)
This was taken the same day as the top picture:
My JG does fine with my other birds. I just had...
I held Leila today! First time ever. I was doing my usual morning greet and pick up of all the other hens that let me hold them, she was standing next to me eyeing me suspiciously as usual, but her attitude seemed different..so I grabbed her and cuddled her. She grumbled a little but didn't...
She's smarter than that :) She sits against a wall not under a roost. I hate that she's usually alone. Sometimes she is cuddled by a BSL, but she never initiates the cuddling.
Wynette, do your JG use standard size nest boxes or do you have something larger for them? She isn't laying yet...
