A picture I took of my Buckeyes as chicks is the BYC picture of the week on the home page! Woohoo for Buckeyes getting some exposure.

Poltroon ~ Congrats to your daughter! Thank you everyone for your thoughts on the white feather. I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens. Of course, it is on a nice cockerel I had been keeping close tabs on for showing. Perhaps it will fall out as he gets adult feathering. He is big...

Question for the experts - if I am seeing a white feather tip at about 4 months, is this cause for concern or could it be molted and never return?

Thank you, but the credit for them must go to Janet Hatch, whom I purchased the chicks from. We are honored to have such fine birds from a top breeder.

Took this picture last week, they were 12 wks at the time. You can see the difference in combs. This might help you compare in a couple more weeks. Most of mine are pretty obvious when cockerel, but a couple I am still guessing.

I suppose I could email someone from the ABPC to ask this question, but if I ask here others will see the answer - Thanks Janet for adding the membership form to the website. Can you only join by mail now and not online? There used to be a paypal address to send payment to and I don't see it...

I wanted to thank you once again for this idea. I spoke with the butcher at our little grocery store, he jumped at the chance to give me the meat. Today I took him a new 5 gallon bucket w/ lid to store scraps in. I'll pick up the bucket and leave another next week. Even though I offered...

Ha Sounds like some bird was creeping around where he didn't belong. That hussy hen straying with an unknown suitor I know it bad to not get what you ordered, but he sure is a cute little guy. Glad you found him a home.

I have a Cochin cross who is similar with the tufted head. Mine has silkie and d'Uccle in it's heritage, it has yellow legs with 5 toes on one foot, the other just 4. I'm stumped, but suspect multiple breeds contributed. The coloring does make me think Swedish Flower Hen also.

The lady in NWMO is here on this thread. I'd recommend getting your eggs or chicks from her. She is not that far from you. Janet Hatch is her name. We are raising 16 chicks from her fall hatch. You will love them. Edited to add, you will find the majority of Buckeyes member here have are...

Hi Janet, Be sure to include the info on joining the club. I was going to join this week and couldn't get on the website. I was worried to send a payment to an email tied to the site in case the address may have changed with the update.

Brilliant idea. We have a small town grocery store which still hand cuts meat, I will be hitting them up for 'sawdust' very soon. Thanks for sharing.

Since birds are omnivores, supplementing the animal protein they need just makes sense to me. I feed my birds deer meat mainly because it is what I have in abundance, and doesn't cost anything. We gut the deer in the field and don't keep the innards. When we process the deer I feed some...

Congrats Chris. What a nice bird. I will be coming back to study and compare him to my own birds once they reach maturity. Sorry, just realized you asked me questions - if you read this tread you will see it is recommend to feed a meat-based protein ration to Buckeyes to achieve maximum...

Hi all. My Buckeye chicks are now 10 weeks old. They have moved from the indoor brooder to the coop with the 'big birds'. Everything that has been said about these wonderful birds is absolutely true. They are the nicest, calmest birds I've ever raised. Instead of fleeing in fear when you...

Congrats Janet and Jen! Great showing for our BYC members. as to the breed history, I have found a great source of original articles on the Buckeyes. Google Books has many old Poultry publications you can download and read for free. I've been pursing them and found many mentions of Mrs...

I use the dust also. Found an old spice bottle and filled with the powder. I sprinkle it everywhere...roost, nest, floor, even the drop pan. I also try and remember to dust their favorite dust bath spot under the trees. I use it as a preventive, no buggies so far My dust came from feed...

Quote: I thank you for honestly sharing your experience. When a person is new to poultry they are at a loss of who to trust and where to purchase. It always helps to have first hand knowledge. The very name of the facility inspires trust, and would lead many to order.
