Obligatory first egg post! My White Rock laid her first today. Consistent with her somewhat contrary nature, she laid it right at the peak of the ramp into the henhouse. Worst place ever. Sigh.
There is value to keeping the older girls around; they share knowledge and "culture" with the new ones coming up, and the fewer disruptions there are to the pecking order, the better. Every time a bird is added or removed, there is tension, so I would only remove if you're really limited in...
Someone has been making conspicuous noises in the run the past few mornings. The White Rock (12 weeks) is my prime suspect, followed by the Barred (11 weeks):
Pullet or cockerel? About 12 weeks old...
Also, my WR did this the other day, in response to a little flycatcher flying past her. I...
True, mine usually come running whenever I step into the yard! I feel like they're so disappointed if I find have treats for them.
If I'm already out in the yard and need to call them, the "chook chook chook!" Works well.
Netting works as fencing- they can't see the top of it, so they don't attempt the jump. My betting around my planter boxes is 4' tall; I think I could have gotten away with 3'. It all depends on what the fence is for, and what breed(s) you have, which will tell you how high they can jump.
My...
This little lady is 10-12 weeks old. Pretty positive she's a lady, based on comparison with her hatch mates and her leg size. However, her wattles are large, and her face, comb, and wattles are red - especially compared to the others of the same age in my mixed flock. Do you think I have an...
Update: 8 days later, their legs and beaks are SO MUCH more yellow. A little free ranging in the backyard, coupled with good feed (we use My Pet Chicken's organic chick starter) has definitely worked.

We named our new girl Lydia, too! But she's a BR (or maybe Cuckoo Marans???), and named after the girl in Beetejuice. I'm also enjoying watching our girls (6&7 weeks) adjust from the squished pen to our free range backyard. They're taking baby exploring steps, and have become much braver and...
Wow! That's a HUGE difference. Thanks for this. I might not know about these ladies until they start laying- or of their legs and beaks yellow up then I'll know for sure. In any case, they're super sweet and I love them, so breed doesn't matter much at all!
Hi everyone! We love our Partridge Rock so much, we bought 2 more pullets out of the Rock bin. Got them home, and I notice they don't have yellow legs or beaks. What do you guys think - is this shoddy breeding or are they Marans? They're incredibly docile, similar in temperament to our PR...
My Partridge Rock arrived yesterday! She's the fastest sprinter, and the first to run to wiggling fingers. She's a feisty one.
2 days old:
And 3 days old...
