To be so optimistic about your chicks' future, Urch must have a very good line. I have not knowingly seen them and would love be able to compare his to others I have seen with good lines. There is different type within the breed itself. I'm wondering if he has Stickler's line or vice versa. Yes...

I recommend them not only based on their big healthy chicks, but more specifically, Mark Fields is helping them with their breeding selections this year. Mr. Fields probably knows as much, or more, than anyone about Dominiques.

Ron, Cackle would be the best hatchery to order Doms.

Hellbender, I'll be most interested in your thoughts and experiences. I had a few of these and found them to be a superior meat chicken to the large breeds that take so long to fill in. Why I haven't gotten them again is a mystery to me. Oh, yeah. A lot of it is those stinkin' med sized eggs

Yes. And they should be better next year since they will have some help from top Dom breeders in selecting matings.

Guess I ordered too early. I ordered 5 Dom bantams from Cackle late summer. Of the chicks I got, they were the only ones that got killed in transit or have died from lack of disease resistance. I have 4 barred Rock bantams from the same order that are fairing quite well. Some one else might have...

John, what you are describing doesn't sound like a docile breed to me. Is this type of behavior, both cocks and hens, been eliminated from your present flock? Or do you consider it "normal behavior" and it's acceptable? Don't mean to be nitpicky but as you know, this is a bone of contention...

Topdog, grow those cockerels out a while before making judgment. As I stated, a lot will depend on the strain/line and where they were bred.

Wow, Sylvester017! You went to a lot of trouble to answer my question. Thank you. A friend told me once that the only fowl he knew of that would eat ticks were barnyard type chickens, not the better bred breeds. Truth on that one remains to be seen. The Ovambo sounds like it gets the job done...
