I have a slow feathering Turken in my flock that ran around with a bare bottom for a while lol. I noticed it with these because I didn't see this with the first 2 I hatched.
They are beautiful aren't they? I was quite blessed I must say.
Here is a pic of most of the last hatch. It amazes me that the chicks I hatched from your eggs are feathering out faster than the Turken mix chicks that are 4 days older.
All of my chickens are barnyard mixes. I think about the issues other pedigreed animals have and would rather have my mutts. Better gene pool in the long run.
I'm in the process of integrating the 2 Dorking/RR mixes and their hatchmates into the main coop which requires a bit of handling. Those 2 chicks are noticeably heavier and fuller in the breast than the rest. The male is more...squat where the female has a longer breast that hasn't filled out as...
Seriously though, it's good of you to do that. I've looked into hatching eggs for ACs and they were far too expensive for my budget. Maybe some day :idunno
I'm following in both threads.
You mentioned one of the AC would be a cull because of pink toes. Do you sell those for eating or are they considered to be undesirable because of that?
Yup, we're working on the other meats right now trying to find sources here. We fish to eat quite a bit but have to be careful with that even due to mercury levels.
My sister doesn't have her gall bladder and has the same problem, particularly with beef. And cheese, she doesn't eat very much...
I like meat, but I went through a phase where I couldn't eat meat. Preparing it for my family even made my stomach turn. I don't abide animal cruelty even if it's livestock.
The Silver Duckwing is such a pretty color when they're all grown up. Good to know they go broody, I'd rather have them do the work next time.
I like the sloppy silver grey with the red leakage too, pretty girl.
@Compost King here are the 2 Dorking/RR chicks. You can see one has a reddish chest and one doesn't. I think your theory holds true that the boys don't get the red in their chest in this case. The second chick has a slightly larger comb and it's just a bit pink, I'm still thinking one cockerel...
This is one of the reasons I prefer to hatch instead of buy. I don't live in SoCal but it's next door and migrant birds can carry it anyway.
I don't do swaps or go to shows and I'm not sure how I would sell pullets either. I don't let people into my yard very often and I have shoes I wear only...
We put carcasses in an ice bath in a cooler to keep the fridge empty and did 4 in one day, but there are 2 of us. Even so, it took us a couple of hours but it went faster as we got some practice.
We have things to purchase and build to make it a smoother process. Haven't tried skinning them...
