Ha ha! Don't feel alone there! ALL of my family and friends just kind of roll their eyes back in their heads, and all facial expressions just glaze over when I start to talk "chickens"! They all look for the nearest exit, and all of a sudden remember things they had to do! Even worse...

Welcome Susanne,
So glad you are going to post pictures. We al like pictures especially Randy (BerkeleyS).
My Wheaten girls just started laying too & I was so surprised to see such large eggs for first time layers. My mossy BCM first eggs looked like toys but with good color.....LOL...

One of the things I love about the Wheatens, besides their dark eggs of course, is that you can color sex them. I think 2 of mine are now laying with 4 more bringing up the rear....hopefully soon.....LOL
My first Wheaten eggs will go in the incubator next week so I am going by what you all are sharing as to what to expect. I am not sure who it is that is laying but I think it is the lighter pullets I have. The eggs are good sized compared to my BCM pullet eggs but lighter than BCM. I am just...

A judge does not have to judge a mean bird, but what can a Silky do to ya? I get bit all the time, but if it is a 8lb bird that wants to kill me I might not take it out. It depends on what breed it is. A Marans is not going to be very fast, so I just put my hand on the top of the cage...

Yes, I have your number Randy and I don't need anything in a cup. I was living in San Francisco in the 60's. I check the birds pretty well, but I won't be doing any of the things you mentioned.
Memo to self: Write Randy's name in my Red Book.
Walt
You two guys are too funny!!!!!

Walt, Is this new ? Don
Don,
I went & took a good look at my Wheaten rooster. I don't see any black feathers but it kind of looks like the ring of feathers around the bottom of the hackle (over the cape?)has a very fine pencil type line around it. Is that what you are talking about?

Oh Yeah, go ahead, ............. get them.............Jump on the band wagon with the rest of Chicken nuts.!!!!!!! LOL
I may have to start my own local chapter of Chickens Anonymous I really think I am addicted!!! Going to take the plunge and get them as well.
Good for you.I...

Jeremy! Hoping they all arrive safe and sound and that you have an AWESOME hatch!!!
cherylcohen just received 15 eggs from me about a half hour or so ago and they all arrived safe. I shipped them yesterday from SW Washington State around 12noon, they went fedex per cheryl's...

I did notice the feathered shanks on mine Don but being new to them didn't know if it was just the line they came from or the variety itself. I am getting 2 new pullets this week end at the poultry show so I will check them out also.
wood&feathers :
Thanks sewandgrow, it sounds like you are seeing the same behavioral types in your flock? I "accidentally" got the hatchery cuckoo with a batch of Australorps from a local propagator. He called her a Barred Rock, but it didn't take me long to suspect Marans. When she started...

exciting! do you have pictures?
I just set 35 wheaten eggs yesterday
My Wheatons are not POL yet, but I am impatiently waiting. I will try to take some pictures later today depending on the weather.
I do have my new incubator waiting to be used & am picking up hatching eggs at...
wood&feathers :
I apologize if this has been answered, but I am getting the impression that the Marans in the US from different lines can differ broadly, such that a Black Copper, a wheaten or cuckoo can be different not only in color of plumage and egg, but also body type and personality. I...
Well I think I am about ready to put my 2 youngests pullets into the Wheaten Marans pen. The original trio is in there & they are not laying yet & the younger girls are almost up to their size. That means I will have 4 pullets, mixed ages & 1 rooster in there. I have a nest box in there but...

Well Randy, mine are not laying yet but maybe soon. My layer pen has started laying again & that includes some new girls from the summer hatches. There is a variety of colored egg layers in there since that was my original goal. No Marans in the layer pen though. The Wheatens are in one...
