Finished my very first quilt block with my practice fabric!! Still lots of issues to work out, but not horrible I guess.

So, I've been messing with my practice fabric and I have a question. When I sew together the triangles, then iron them down. There are tips on the ends that need to be cut off. I check and double checked that I sewed it 1/4 inch from edge. Is that normal, or am I doing something really wrong?
