I have 2 brooding hens... I also have a rooster. Is it possible for the rooster to fertilize their eggs even if they are a different breed? And do hens only go broody if they have been mated with?
Thanks!
I have a female muscovy duck and if I want her to have babies I need a male. There are plenty of males just living and being a nuisance in my neighborhood. Can I just walk my duck around the block to search for a male and let them do the dirty? How many time would I need to do that? Is it possible?
Hi! I’m new to chickens and definitely wasn’t expecting to keep a rooster. Since we did I’ve enjoyed the comfort of knowing he’s with them when they are free ranging. I have 5 hens and 1 rooster. My hens are Barred Rocks and ISA Browns and my rooster is a Bantam Silkie. I kept him because I...
Hi, I have an 8 month old male duck who mates a lot with my female who is the same age.
However, I will be getting two female ducklings soon. They won't be living together right away of course, I will probably wait a month or so until their feathers start growing in like you're supposed to.
My...
Looking to rehome my 6 month old Muscovy Drake. He was a rescue duckling and we raised him from 4 days old. However he has become more aggressive in his hormonal state, and we dont have the amount of females he needs to calm down so he is acting out. With having two young daughters I...
Hi, I have 1 khaki campbell drake + 5 female khaki campbell ducks
who are close to 5 months now.
During the last 2 weeks, I have noticed the drake mating with the ducks,
and even though there was pulling of feather or the neck, things were fine,
and seemed normal for their mating ritual...
Is it safe or should I say wise to breed the father to a daughter? I am looking for someone to trade with on a another tread, but thought I may consider this if it is safe and in general a common practice. I do not want any oddities or bad personalities from my birds. The mating pair I do...
G'day all!
Brand new to raising quail but loving it so far!
Grew up on a farm in rural Australia and have my own home now with my wife closer to suburbia, so quail were an obvious choice with the smaller yard. We have a great compact garden with worm farms, veggies and now quail, aiming to be...
Hi everyone. I've read somewhere that the birds will be capable of laying fertile eggs for several days, after a single mating. Is it true? Does anyone know anything about it? Is it the same for cockatiels?
My female buff despises my White African gander. Last spring she wouldn let him near her and he seemed to have no interest in even attempting to mate with her. Later in the summer I bought 2 week old goslings and let her see them and she immediately adopted them. I thought the male was always...
So I had just got done telling another BYC member not to worry, her rooster will get the hang of it as he matures. :hugs And I've had a dozen roosters in my experience with chickens.
But I'm dealing with a young Sumatra stag- 7 months old. He grabs the hen and hops on and does the dance...
I have a Black Copper Marans rooster who is about 8 months old. He seems to only take a liking to my Welsummer hen, and by that I mean she is the only one allowed to be all up in his personal bubble 24/7. The flock follows him but he seems to ignore the rest of the ladies. I am trying to get...
As you know its just the 2 of them right now and yes i know i should have another girl to relieve mama from taking a beating..i just worry he might really hurt her. His grip on her is pretty powerful and my boyfriend said he had her neck twisted around. We have tgem separated. She doesnt seem...
Hi, I have two Emus, Wally and Willow. Wally is 20 months and Willow is 23 months old. Willow does not want Wally around at all and spits and hisses at him when he gets close. When she sees me or any other human she will come up behind us and squat like she is trying to mate with us. Did...
I have a cockerel that is ten and a half weeks old who is trying to mate with a pullet who is also ten and a half weeks and she hasn't started laying yet. I thought they didn't try to mate until the pulleys start laying?
So roughly 3 months ago our family added a pekin duck to our small flock so that our mallard hen had another duck since her sister passed away. We found out a few weeks later that this pekin was a drake. My parents were worried about ducklings but I assured them that that would only happen if...
Hello all! I have 2 Indian runner ducks that are 5 1/2 months old. I had ordered 2 males from Metzer Farms. They have recently started mating in their pool which I understand is common with ducks. They will alternate and both mate with the other. They are also a lot louder than I expected male...
