«We Could Be Legends»

After the hour long or more drive, Wolfram was slowly drifting into conciousness. He mewled softly, wondering why his head and shoulder where aching so painfully, and why he couldn't decipher any words being spoken. He didn't hear any words, just muffled voices, unable to tell which was male and which female. He let out a growl of pain, and unsheathed his claws, sinking them into the thighs of whichever person that was holding him. His eyelids felt heavy, and he didn't even try to open them. His head was foggy, unable to remember what memory was real, and what was a horrifying unconscious nightmare.

"Well, doesn't look like anyone else is coming. Time to leave." Toby said and pulled out of the parking lot. He turned the radio up until it was almost deafening and started singing along. He was starting to recognize where they were, and he knew they were just a few blocks away. Poor mrs. Loson and Wolfram with their super hearing. Alpha is used to it by now, but they probably aren't. Ughhhhh, why must I torture myself with this stupid house and all the stupid monsters? "We're here." He said, pulling into the driveway. "You guys go ahead and go in, I need a few minutes."

River nodded, and opened her mouth to say something when Lachlan let out a small yelp, and she slid her eyes over to her son. How many times am I going to go be about to say something and then someone say something before I can? "What is it, Lach?"
"Uh, nothing. Just wounds being... Wound-y." He offered, wincing at his poor choice of words.
River rolled her eyes, having saw Wolfram sink his claws into Lachlan's leg. "Let's go." She said, sliding out of the car and holding the door open for Lachlan.

Wolfram struggled weakly, his eyes fluttering open. His vision was very blurred, just barely able to make out a blurry shape of seemingly a woman with wolf ears. He hissed in fright, kicking his back legs against Lachlan's thigh, struggling and trying, but miserably failing, to get to his paws.

Gotta face it eventually.
Toby slowly got out of the car and stared at the large white house. It was just as scary and empty looking as he remembered it. He could feel the presence of something tugging around at him. He didn't think he would ever have to come back. He couldn't block out the memories any longer, and they all poured out like a waterfall.

(When he was seven)
Toby was sitting at the kitchen table, coloring. In front of him, Jenna was washing dishes.
"Mama, why doesn't daddy love me?" He asked quietly, staring at what he was drawing.
"What? What do you mean, sweetheart?" Jenna asked, putting the dishes down and sitting next to him.
"He doesn't like me. I did something." Toby looked up at her, with wide purple eyes full of pain, confusion, and curiosity. "What did I do?"
"Toby, you did nothing. Your father loves you, he always will." Toby stared back down at the piece of paper.

(When he was seventeen)
Toby was laying in a ball on the floor, clutching a large butcher knife, crying. The demons were everywhere. The large shadowy figures with just enough of a human appearance to be unsettling. They were mangled, and black smoky tendrils swirled around them. He could hear them, scratching at the window, outside the door, in the closet. He refused to open his eyes. I-I'm safe in here. No one can hurt me. He tried to tell himself. There was a loud banging on the door. "Sweetheart, open the door, please." A woman pleaded from the other side. "Toby, unlock the door, now!" A man growled. D-don't let them in. They're with the others. They'll kill me. The door of the room was knocked off the hinges. Standing in the doorway was a woman with shoulder length brown hair, and purple eyes, next to a tall man with large wings and a mask. Toby stood up with surprising speed and backed into the wall, holding the knife out in front of him. "G-g-get a-away from m-me." He whimpered. "They'll hurt me. Y-you let them in." He watched as the shadowy creatures slowly crept into the room.
"What are you talking about? Honey, no one will hurt you, I promise. Please, put the knife down." Jenna said.
"How do you not see them?! They're everywhere!" Toby screamed at her. Rex slowly moved closer. "I don't want to have to do this, Toby. Put the knife down. It's late, you're tired, go back to bed. We can talk about this in the morning."
"I SAID GET AWAY FROM ME!" Toby screamed again. Rex looked at Jenna, and she nodded slightly. "Wh-what are you doing? D-don't-" in one swift movement, Rex ripped the knife out of Toby's hands and dropped it on the floor. He kicked it out of reach and grabbed Toby's wrists. He pulled him forward and twisted him around, pulling him into the basket hold. He wrapped his wings around him as Toby struggled to break free. "Let go of me!" He screamed. Jessi walked over to the room rubbing her eyes. "Mom, what's going on? It's two in the morning, shouldn't you guys be in bed?" Her eyes widened when she saw Toby. "Jessi, go into my bedroom and close and lock the door. Only come out when I say you can. Go." Jenna said. Jessi quickly walked into the other room. Jenna sighed and grabbed the basket that was on the shelf. She dug around in it, pulling out a couple of pill bottles. "It looks like he forgot to take something today. No wonder it's so bad." Toby's screams slowly faded into crying as he went limp in Rex's arms. The last thing he remembered was being carried to his bed, before he passed out.

(When he was eighteen)
Toby grabbed the last box and ran downstairs. He was finally able to move out now that he was eighteen, and he would never have to see this miserable place ever again. "This is the last one." He said. "Great! Will you be coming over this weekend?" Jenna asked. His face hardened. "No, and why should I?" He replied.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Jenna asked, looking confused.
"You never made time for me, so why should I make time for you?" He snapped. "You were always at work, and never once thought "hey, maybe I should actually have dinner with my kids for once."" He growled. He didn't know where he was going with this, or why he was so upset. All she did was ask if he would be coming over next weekend.
"Do you really think I wanted to be at work all the time? I did that for you guys, so you could afford to go to a nice college."
"That's not true and you know it. You're a workaholic. Even if it was true, do you really think college is important? Maybe it's just me, but I would have given anything to just be a normal family, with normal parents who had normal jobs. To just be loved for once. That's all I've ever asked for, but apparently that's too hard."
"You are starting to cross the line, be quiet."
"Or what? You'll do what you always do and send me away? If you didn't want me you shouldn't have gotten drunk that one night. Thinking about it, that's how you solve all your problems. You send them away, and if that doesn't work you go to your 'medication'." A loud crack echoed through the air and Toby's face jerked to the side. He slowly raised his hand to touch his burning and throbbing face.
"That's enough." Jenna hissed angrily. Toby stood shocked at what just happened. He pushed back the tears that threatened to poor out of his eyes. He grabbed the box and stormed outside, throwing it as hard into his truck as he could.

He was abruptly snapped back to the present when Alpha started licking his hand. He quickly wiped the tears from his eyes and kissed Alpha. His legs felt like jello, and kept him from entering the house. Just like I told Wolfram, life is like a smack of suck in the face. Toby sighed and walked to the door.

Brisa heard the sound of a car pulling up outside and went to the front door, cautiously sneaking a look out the window. Letting out a large breath that she didn't know she had been holding in, she realized that she recognized the woman who had just stepped out of the car. Aunt River. She opened the front door and called, "Glad you all got here safely!" Wincing a little at her thoughtless use of the word safely, she glanced at the car, trying to see who else was here and noticed Toby climbing silently out of the driver's door with a troubled look on his face. Poor guy. He seems to be going through a lot. She thought sympathetically.

Jessi glanced out the window. "They're here!" She said, running out of the house and over to Toby. She smacked him, and then pulled him into a tight hug. "Geez woman, what is wrong with you? Why did smack me?" Toby asked, looking shocked at what just happened. "Because you've made me worried sick. If you get hurt again I will kill you."
"Uh huh. Pretty sure you're already killing me with this stupid house. Please tell me that me getting smacked every time I'm here won't turn into a habit." Toby said, hugging her back.
"Oof, right, sorry about that. At least you won't have to deal with mom."
"Mom is the least of my concern right now. Can you let me go? This is starting to get weird." Jessi took a few steps back. "We ordered pizza, it should be here any minute. Hey guys, we should go inside before someone gets hypothermia." She said and walked inside, followed by Toby.

"Hey, Wolfram. It's just me, Lachlan. And my mom, River. You're fine, we're at Toby's mom's place." Lachlan said, unsure of what he should do.
