«We Could Be Legends»

Wolfram yowled in triumph, shooting after the she-cat. He closed on her tail, and leapt, slamming her to the ground. "Give it here, Ma–" He stopped. Underneath him was not a long haired calico Maine Coon, but a young, sleek, short furred gray, orange and white kitten, a blue-gray butterfly clamped between her jaws. "Meep! Let go!" She squealed, squirming.
"Sorry! I'm sorry. We are looking for a cat, Maine Coon, calico, mangled face, and she has something in her mouth. It's white, something a Nofur would use. Have you seen her?" He meowed, releasing the squirming kitten.
"Sorry, Neko. I've been by this wall all day, and there has been no one but you. Gotta run!" She snatched her butterfly, and ran,
Wolfram snarled, pelting by to the wall. He shifted instantly, and leaned against the wall, panting heavily. "Jessi! It's a trap! That wasn't Mapleshade, it's just a kitten. Mapleshade isn't over here, she's on the otherside, and by now she's gone!"
Lachlan squawked, spiraling down and landing clumsily beside Wolfram, several feathers coming off. With another caw, he shifted into his human form. "Just... Just like that? She can't be too far, with Connor's and Mom's nose, and you're hearing, and my and Jessi's wings..."

Come on, come on! Every inch of Wolfram's small from screeched in protest as he summoned every last ounce of strength in his body, running at press-paw speed. His mind, half human, half cat, screeched two different things. One half urging himself on, the other half telling him to give up. His eyes caught another tuft of black fur, and he let out a warning yowl to Connor, rapidly changing course. "This way! This way!" He pleaded the wolf was following him. We've got her, we've got her! We can do this! Suddenly, a large, brick wall was looming ahead, and he let out a mixed noise, a mixture of a yowl with a snarl. He skidded, thrusting his shoulder sideways to stop his face from smashing into the solid wall. Thankfully, he stopped just in time, avoiding a painful crash. "Slow down! Slow down! Wall, wall!" He snarled, crouching and launching himself upwards, missing the top by several inches. She's gone. We lost.

Jessi stopped and landed next to him. "Darn it!" She yelled. The wall was looking like it would be good for punching, but she decided against punching it. She sighed. "Now what? We should keep looking, right? Do you know where she would go? Maybe back to the Pure base you guys were taken to." She said, looking around. It's pointless. She's already long gone, and is probably about to unleash the poison. We'll never find it in time. She thought.

Connor let out a disgruntled roar when it became apparent that they'd been outsmarted and nimbly cleared the wall. He landed foursquare on the other side, but not on canine paws.
"Kids, hate to say it, but we should let her go," he muttered stiffly as he wrung out his tingling hands. He knew exactly who he wanted to heap blame upon for their defeat, but that would get them nowhere; instead it just would complicate the tense peace they'd managed. "Even if we were able to keep following, for all we know she could lead us straight to our deaths."

"Don't you understand?!" Wolfram turned on Connor, but instead of a look of rage, his eyes glittered with desperation. "We're going to die anyway." He was acutely aware of a strange pounding noise in his ears, how every nerve was alight with a raging fire, hypersensitive ears straining for any sort of noise. "That poison is so powerful, it will kill a entire race. It kills Inhumans, Mr. Asfaw!" He swallowed a gasp of air, glancing frantically between Lachlan and Connor. "People like you, and me, and Jessi, and Lachlan. It will kill us! All of us! We have to find her..." A hand shot out to plant against the wall, steadying himself. "I can't let all of you die. Mum can't have died in vain. I won't let her get away with this..."

"I understand perfectly well, Wolfram," Connor intoned evenly. He leaned back against the wall with a winding sigh, his placidity a sharp contrast to Wolfram's panic. "What I'm saying is we should plan our pursuit more carefully, rather than just making a mad dash. If we let ourselves fall to her and her men, our efforts will be in vain and our oblivious race will fall anyway."

"Okay, so what should we do? Indigo is part of an anti-Pure group, so we could get everyone she works with to help us fight. They should also have a lot of weapons at their base we could use." Jessi suggested.

"No, you don't understand!" Wolfram snarled. "If you understood, you would realize we don't have the time to plan anything. I will not stand here and accept the fact that my mother died in vain. I am going to get that Key back." He gaze sharpened suddenly. "Or die trying." His body morphed, skin melting into fur, nails turning to claws, ears shifting into erect furred ones, and suddenly he was no longer a human, but a cat, and with a tremendous leap, he leapt to the top of the brick wall.

"What I understand is that you are going to certainly die if you go alone," Connor snapped after the skinny cat. He stepped away from the wall and pivoted so that he was the closest he'd get to eye level with the frantic feline. He offered Jessi an approving side nod before he turned back to Wolfram. "You're unarmed and grieving. All of us are, for that matter."

Jessi nodded. "I'll go tell the others." She said, and flew back to where everyone else was. "Indigo, aunt River, Misty, Ash, everyone else, I think we're going to go to the anti-Pure place for reinforcements and weapons. We couldn't catch Mapleshade, so this should be a good plan." She said. She turned to Indigo. "You're going to need to lead us there."

Heavily silent, Ash studied Brisa's board with narrowed eyes and a paling face. The reality of the pursuers' potentially costly chase was sinking in further and further with every passing second. For all she knew, this was just another horrid setup that wouldn't return her husband...unscathed.
She put both palms to her face and let a rattling sigh escape through her trembling fingers. Okay. Okay. This. It's okay.
Two people..or three kids...

"Misty, River, Jenna," she said suddenly, her tone dropping sharply. "Come over here."

Jenna looked over from where she was watching the others take off after Mapleshade. She walked towards Ash. "What are you thinking?" She asked.

Lachlan stared stupidly into space, his spine prickling with shock, guilt, and fear. Paralyzed by the fact that they had, seemingly, failed.
Mapleshade had the serum that could destroy all the inhumans... Almost everyone he loved.
And he'd done nothing to stop her.
Wolfram and Connor flew by him in blurs of motion. They'll never catch her by paw, she's too fast. And smart.
...But what about the air?

He turned slowly to Finlay and Camilla at his side, staring at them with an odd expression stuck to his face.
"Don't you dare." Camilla whimpered, obviously terrified.
"Sorry, Cam." He murmured, suddenly shifting into a crow, spreading his wings and shakily climbing into the air, setting off after the she-cat.

River stepped over, completely calm except for the slightest tremble of her tail. "...What're you planning?" Please. Please just tell me what to do. I don't know anymore.

Jessi nodded. "I'll go tell the others." She said, and flew back to where everyone else was. Brisa turned and watched her “aunts” come forward, paling a bit at the hopeless looks one their faces. After a long moment she tore her gaze away, unable to handle seeing defeat in the very women who to her had always been unshakeable. She raised her eyes expectantly to Ash’s face, so focused what she was going to say that she didn’t hear Jessi coming and nearly jumped out of her skin at her friend’s arrival. “Has Toby or the chicken, Frosty, called you?” She asked Indigo worriedly. Will there even be any weapons or reinforcements when we get there?

"We're all going to–" Wolfram paused mid-hiss, head jerking wildly to the side, looking down. The same calico kitten had crept back with wide blue eyes. "Neko, the Nofurs are approaching. They have deathsticks and strange faces, you have to run."
His hackles raised, and he lifted his head, jaws parted. "Thank you, kitten. Run, go back to your Nofurs. And be careful!" He called softly after the fleeing kit. He glanced at Connor, and then jerked his gaze to where he scented the Pure members. "We have to run. You're right, we will die if we try and face them alone." Did he even understand him? Probably not, but he just prayed that he would understand the message as he leapt into the grass on the otherside.
