«We Could Be Legends»

"Don't take anything she says to personal." Taylor assured him from where she was beside Brisa. "She acts the same way to everyone; rude, snobbish, and a real big jerk. You aren't scary, she's just being Lily."

"Oh, okay." Toby said, glancing at Lily. He was glad he wasn't the only one she didn't like.

Brisa jumped at the sound of the gunshots, startled out of her thoughts by the noise. “I’m pretty sure I can lift it.” She answered Wolfram, eyeing the cracked concrete slab. “I don’t know how long I can hold it, but I’ll do my best.” She raised her hands a little and very carefully started lifting off some of the lighter debris, setting the pieces down in a pile nearby and making sure not to unbalance the objects on top of Bleddyn’s father.

Ash was immediately there, latching her fingers firmly into the wolf's shoulder blades and pulling backward with all of her might. Connor came free relatively easily; the desperate force she used not only released him from the remaining rubble, but propelled them both backward. But when she hit the ground with fur in her face, what she felt was the farthest she could get from relief. She kept herself from getting up, from seeing how badly he was hurt and just how badly she'd worsened it all.
Instead, she lay there awkwardly on the cluttered pavement with all sorts of debris pressing into her skin and relished the simple success of having him safely in her arms- even if only for this fleeting, delusional moment.

But when Bleddyn lunged forward, she wasn't going for her father. Instead, she scrambled beneath the hovering slab of deteriorating concrete, sliding painfully over the mess of smaller particles below it, and plunged her arm into the open cavern that Sherri had disappeared into. As soon as her fingers grasped a sufficient fistful of fur, she dove forward and rolled out into the open air. Once momentum had carried them both safely out of the way, she set the undoubtedly irked cat down in front of her. "Dude, you don't want to be a furry pancake, do you? Sure, trusting in Brisa is fine and all, but who knows where that thing will drop."
Sherri squeaked her displeasure as a firm hand curled around her scruff. After significant jostling, she found purchase and and stared fiercely at her rescuer, resembling an angry pom-pom as her fur fluffed.
She flattened when Brisa's unstable hold on the rock was terminated, the thud sounding like a nuclear explosion in her ears, fur spiking even higher.
She meowed what should have been a thankyou to the blur-of-color-and-motion-that-was-Bleddyn, though it sounded like a low frequency rumble in her throat.
Her fur slicked as she watched people bicker on things that were not relevant.
She felt a sudden desire to be closer to Peter, who was excluded from the argument. Sherri stepped carefully over the rocks, wondering when these kids would move on to more urgent subjects, and sat at Peter's feet, studying the newcomers, whiskers twitching in amusement as the others began to conspire against Lily.

Brisa sent a contemptuous glare in Lily’s direction, the contempt in her eyes turning to disgust as she threw herself on Wolfram, who was clearly uncomfortable, and then shifting to flat out dislike when she yelled at poor Toby, who was just trying to help. Abandoning her resolution to be nice to the girl, she stretched out her hand and sent out a burst of power, lifting Lily off her feet and holding her in midair. “I don’t mind, River. She’s always so much fun to be around.” She said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
River didn't even try to hide the grin on her face as she saw Lily hanging limply in the air, the girl's feet a good foot off the ground. It quickly faded as she turned back to Connor.
From where she crouched, bedraggled Bleddyn stared at the two newcomers through loathing eyes. "The world's kinda coming to an end and here we are..." She trailed off into a contemplative silence, then leaned in closer to Sherri with a conspiratorial gleam in her eye. "Can I punch 'em?"

Ash remained in her prostrate position on the pavement, waiting patiently for Connor's bulk to be lifted off of her. The repetitive gunshots had her heart seeming to jolt a bit higher with every beat, but she wasn't about to make any sudden movements to get up. The less he was jarred, the better- not like I didn't just do exactly that.
"I can help, too, you know," she said quietly, having cracked a shallow smile in response to how his twitching nose tickled her cheek. "The oaf does happen to be my oaf."
Lily screeched as she was suddenly thrown into the air, unable to move. She decided in that moment it would be her life's work to make this group as miserable as possible without actually injuring them.

Wolfram glanced at Brisa as Lily was hovered in midair, and couldn't help but shoot a small grin at Brisa. Genius idea...maybe that'll shut Lily up for a bit.
He was startled from his thoughts when Ash spoke. "Right." He flinched when screams in the distance reached his ears, shuddering. How many people are dying in this moment? Facing Mapleshade while we are here, hiding from her? We're cowards.
He bent down, grasping the least injured part of the massive wolf, and glanced at Ash and River. "Ready, River? Ash?"
"Okay, Ash. You support his middle so that he isn't sagging between us." River said, bending to pick up Connor. "Ready." She growled, her tail twitching violently as the sound of gunshots filled her highly acute ears.

Wolfram knew the wolf wasn't going to be the easiest to carry, but he did not expect his injured arm to roar to life, shrieking it's protest at the extra weight added to it. Drawing in a sharp breath, he held Connor firmly, pleading silently for his arm to quit aching.

Brisa returned the small, mischievous smile, but it fell from her face as she heard the gunshots again. I wish there was something we could do. I hope my parents are okay. I- she glanced around at the group. I wish I had met them all under different circumstances. Can’t change the past though. She sighed and then suddenly remembered that she had someone floating in the air near her. “Sorry about this, but you weren’t being nice to anyone, rudely denied help, and you can’t keep up on your own, so this was pretty much the best solution.” She told the angry girl matter-of-factly, trying to shake her sad thoughts.

That was blunt. Peter watched Brisa, somewhat surprised at her assessment of Lily, and possibly more surprised at her sudden desire to carry people in the air like some sort of evil wizard. I'm overthinking this, aren't I? He looked down and noticed the orange cat at his feet. "Hey, cat," he murmured, kneeling down. "Uh, is this anyone's cat?" he asked lamely.

(This is assuming Peter doesn't know Sherri is a cat-shifter. XD)

"Okay, that's good." He said, with a small smile. He frowned. "I'm not... I'm not weird or scary looking, am I?" Toby asked. "I mean, I know I'm ugly, but.." He shook his head. "Never mind."

"Don't take anything she says to personal." Taylor assured him from where she was beside Brisa. "She acts the same way to everyone; rude, snobbish, and a real big jerk. You aren't scary, she's just being Lily."
“You’re not ugly!” Brisa reassured him quickly. “And you’re definitely not scary or weird. You also have pretty eyes.” She added, agreeing with Taylor.

Sherri rolled her eyes and tried to shake her head. "Meow."
Sherri concentrated very hard. She had shifted a lot today, and it was becoming somewhat painful. She gasped as she turned into a petite redheaded human sprawled on the ground. She pulled herself up, supporting her weight by her arms. "No. I'm not somebody's cat." She flicked her cat ears.
A headache was starting to form.

Toby frowned. "Thanks, I guess." He said, unconvinced that what she said was true. He could list many reasons why he was ugly, but decided now wasn't a good time.

(Is it weird that this morning I imagined a fish-shifter who had the vice of random seizures? Bleddyn must have fish children.)
