«We Could Be Legends»

"Who's David?" Indigo asked. She looked at Toby sideways, her brow creased with concern. "Is that your..." creepy shadow puppet muse? "shadow guy?"
She shook her head and looked at Toby in the eye. "Maybe you need something to keep your head from spinning," she said. Toby looked dizzy and unstable.

"Oh yeah, my shadow guy. His name is David. He's my friend," he said shrugging, ignoring how weird and creepy he must sound. He subconsciously took a small step away from her. "I'll be fine, I'm not too dizzy." He said, even though he was seeing double.

"I can take social cues. You're denying help," Indigo stated in an emotionless tone. She stood straight and stared down in a condescending way that usually made people admit all their fears and worries.

Toby flinched. He felt like he was in trouble, and it wasn't a feeling he liked. "So what if I am? Nothing you can do about it," he mumbled, staring down at his blood stained shoes.

"Yes I can, Toby," Indigo said softly. "Can't you see? I'm trying to help you, but it will only work if you let me."
Her clear violet eyes searched for contact with his. Finding none, she looked off into the distance, beyond the fighting. We have a great big world out there. We have something to fight for. We have a reason to win.
She looked up. "That wasn't the right thing to say. I don't know how to explain to you..."

"I don't need help. I don't want help," Toby said, more defensive than he would've liked. He looked up at her, his eyes slightly damp. He didn't look mad, just scared and frustrated. "I get you're just trying to help, but don't. Worry about something more important."

"I care about you, Toby," Indigo said firmly. There's nothing more important. It's not like I know anyone else who is more sincere, or more of a friend to me. I don't know anyone who cares more about me. If there's anyone or anything important, it's Toby; taking care of Toby.

Toby looked down again, and clenched his fists, adjusting his grip on the gun. Before he could change his mind, he pulled her into a tight hug. He tried to hide his shaking, but since he was so close to her it was nearly impossible. "You're so frustrating," he mumbled. He pulled away and rubbed his eyes, trying to keep the tears that were threatening to come out at bay.

The move was so sudden, as Toby tensed, Indigo expected him to run away, like all the others. Instead, he embraced her. Indigo let him, reached around him.
She didn't remember getting a hug ever, but it was a pretty good thing, she decided.
You're so frustrating.
I know. I wish I could be someone else sometimes.

She looked at his red eyes as he pulled away and felt his stress melt away.
She gestured back at the battlefield. "I think we should go back," she said.

"Yeah, you're right," he said quietly. He put on the bulletproof vest, which was way to big for him, and walked back into the fight. He shot at the Pure, but the bullets kept missing. Occasionally, one would hit its intended target and Toby would look sad and disgusted. He hated hurting people, and killing them was even worse. I'm a monster. If we're killing people, does that make us as bad as the people we're trying to stop? What if we're the bad guys?

Brisa finally began to uncurl herself from the fetal position and tried to stand but only managed to sit upright. Is this what a concussion feels like? She had no idea how much time had passed, but she could still hear gunshots and fighting. Each time a gun fired the noise would send a wave of pain through her throbbing head. She finally managed to kind of army crawl out from behind the truck that had been shielding her, and she sat there trying to get her eyes to focus on the crazy movement of the battle. It felt like she had been spun on a swivel chair a hundred times and told to walk in a straight line. She finally scooted backwards into a safer spot behind the truck when she remembered that she had left her gun on the battlefield, and leaning against the mud-encrusted wheel, she drew her knees up against her chest and squeezed her eyes shut. I’m so useless. I can’t see straight or even walk or anything and my friends are dying out there!
