«We Could Be Legends»

The pixie rolled onto her knees in a blast of her golden light. One was shattered. She ran a finger through her hair. Singed. She touched her face. Blistered. Her head. Bruised. Her hand. Bloodied. Her wings. Gone. Her heart. Broken. I'm missing a lot of pieces.
She squeezed her dusty eyelids together as tears threatened to pour out. I'm alive. I'm alive. But I couldn't save her.
And Liam never came back for me.

Her little grimy fingers clenched. She crawled away from the fire, legs aching, tears falling.
All I've ever worked for is a waste. The world is shattered. Maybe I can at least put mine back together.
She lay down by the great white van and closed her golden eyes.

Toby carefully closed Jenna's eyes and stood up, wiping away his tears on the back of his shirt. She killed my mom. He grabbed a large gun and extra ammo. He looked around the clearing, and spotted the circle of blue fire. That's where Mapleshade must be. And I'm going to kill her. He looked at Indigo, knowing his plan was probably a suicide mission, and that was the last time he would see her. Part of him hoped she would convince him that going against Mapleshade was a bad idea, but the other part wanted to punch her if she tried.
And with that, Toby walked in the direction of the blue fire, tripping over the bodies that littered the ground.

Indigo wiped the tears off her face. It's not her. Not my mother. It could be someone even scarier, but I'm no coward. "You can't do this, Toby," she touched his arm. "At least not alone."

Toby turned to Indigo. "She killed my mom. She's going to pay for that," he said. He looked crazed, staring up at her with wide, bloodshot eyes. "And I'm going to kill her whether I'm alone or not."

Wolfram didn't move. He just stared after Bleddyn. "I tried to stop you guys. If you die, the blame is on yourselves, and not me." His gaze lingered on River for a moment, wishing she would stay. "Please be careful, River."
With a soft sigh, he slipped into the undergrowth after Bleddyn. Somehow the thorns were sharper now. The branches and vines more offending. Quickly, he struggled through the wood, until he staggered into the clearing. What he saw was utter chaos.
The Pure were fighting twice as hard now, and there seemed to be twice as many of them. Mapleshade stood in the center of the pavement, a fairly large ring of blue-gray-black flame surrounding her, and another man. This man towered over Mapleshade, and Wolfram realized that the man was the one creating the fire. Then adrenaline kicked back into his veins. She killed Tayn, Thomas, and Mom and so many more...
With a snarl of fury, Wolfram pelted forward, and ran straight into the flame.
"Same to you, Wolf. And hey, if you do get yourself killed? I'mma kill you." River smirked, revealing sharp white fangs.
She scrambled after them, the pain in her side only subdued by raging adrenaline. I have to get back to the boys and Camilla and Ash. Alice should be safe in Wolfram's car; it's out of the way enough.
As she broke through the brambles after them, her breath caught. The clearing was in utter turmoil, it appeared as though the Pure had doubled as the Heroes were tiring, and in the center of it all, Mapleshade stood tall; surrounded by some kind of odd looking fire and flanked by a tall man. There. So she's just gonna stand there, protected, and let her men spill their blood while she's safe within that fire? Coward.
Something beside her drew her attention, and her eyes fell to the ground to be met with the sight of a charred body, burned beyond recognition. All that she could tell was that it had once been female. Her stomach twisted, and her breathing faltered once more. The remains could be a Pure, but something told her she hadn't been one of the terrorist. Who? Camilla, Alice, Ash, Sherri, Jenna, or Taylor?
Movement ripped her from her thoughts, her hand surging towards her gun until she recognized who the two inhumans who stood before her were, and she stumbled forward, pulling her oldest son and youngest niece into a short hug, before backing away and inspecting them for wounds. "You two okay? Where's Lach?"
"We're fine," Camilla murmured distantly, tugging a strand of fiery red hair behind her ear.
"I was with Lachlan, but when that fire sprang up-" Finlay glanced behind him, motioning towards the blueish-gray fire with his hand. "-I was stuck on one side and him on the other." He finished breathlessly, glancing back to his mother.
"Uh, alright, you two--" She scanned the area. "You two go over to where Taylor and Ash are, help them out, and hey? Stay safe." She ordered, her voice firm.
They nodded, and retreated back towards the others, jumping into action and attacking several Pure, but River tore her eyes from them, turning towards the fire to see Wolfram run straight into it.
She groaned, her eyes flickering over the fire until she found a spot where the fire was lower to the ground, and she suddenly flung herself forward, before bunching her muscles and leaping over it, barely avoiding having her ankles scorched, and landed on her feet, but the pain at the jostling of her side caused her to double over. Get up, get up!
She slowly stood up tall, her dark blue eyes locked on Mapleshade.

The move was rash. Wolfram knew it the moment the flames touched his legs, and without warning the ice-blue fire enveloped him, stopping him from reaching Mapleshade. He knew in that moment he was going to burn alive, whether he wanted to or not. The heat was unbearable, yet he couldn't even open his mouth to exclaim the agony he felt, because it felt welded shut.
Then, the flames burst apart as white-fire met ice-gray, freeing him.
Though he was now free from the flames, which he realized was Taylor's doing, he still felt like he was burning. Then he saw Mapleshade, and she was still grinning. "Ah, finally figured it out, did you?" She cooed, watching River and Wolfram closely.
"You're a coward, Mapleshade." Wolfram hissed through clenched teeth, staggering forward, a hand pressed against his injured side. "Sending someone to be killed just to get me away. That's cowardly."
"Yes, well," Mapleshade glanced at the man beside her, her gaze casual. "It had to be done, so." She shrugged.
Wolfram didn't realize River was standing there until that moment. He shot a horrified glare at her. Go back, go back!
Mapleshade crossed the distance between Wolfram and herself, nodding to the man beside her. "I'll give you both one chance. Give me the key, and I'll leave you alone. Don't give it to me...well, then I'll have to kill you. Just like I did Silver. And Tayn. And Thomas. And Jenna and so many other people."
"Why kill me? It won't get you anywhere." Wolfram growled, straightening up to his full height. But it didn't seem to scare her. Scarily enough, she was now laughing.
"Because that's what I do, Wolfram! Why do you think I got were I am now?" She outstreatched her arms, beckoning around them. "Look around, Wolf. I have hundred and hundreds of people at my command. Thousands working on projects and weapons. And how did I get here, you ask? Because I have the guts to kill."
She smirked, tilting her head to look at him. "So," she glanced at River. "What's it going to be?"

Brisa struggled to her feet and parted the makeshift shield around her when she heard River and Wolfram’s voices, followed by Mapleshade’s malicious hiss. She couldn’t see them through the flames or make out what they were saying, but she knew the outcome of the confrontation. Either her friends would be killed or Mapleshade and the shadow guy would, and she wished desperately for the latter.

Thomas' name nearly sent River's hand to her gun, however she resisted the urge, but Jenna's name shocked her. So I was right? That body, it was Jenna's?
She didn't let her emotions show, slowly working out a plan in her head, and blatantly ignored Wolfram's terrified glare, her eyes level with Mapleshade's, and she sighed, feigning disappointment. "Really, Mapleshade? You haven't figured that out yet?" She shook her head, shuffling almost boredly forward, positioning herself calming in-front of Wolfram, hoping to take the brunt of an attack if one came. "You see, we gave you it. You used it, and it melted all the metal. But, do you know why? I've been trying to work that out in my head ever since I realized it wasn't working, and the only thing that makes sense is that Silver realized how bad it was and sabotaged it. Which means-" She shrugged, giving a lazy motion around them. "-there is no more key. And all this? For nothing. You failed, Mapleshade."
She tilted her head, studying the equally tall woman's mutilated face. "Even if it had worked, do you know what would have happened? Your friend over there might have been okay, but shifters? The three of us? Undoubtedly dead. You'd be dead, so why would you even want it to work? I know how you people think, how your minds work and let me tell you, survival's at the top." She pointed upwards for extra emphasis, giving a short pause. "And let me tell you another thing, Mapleshade, there is no outcome of this where you come out on the top, do you understand? You're never going to win."

"You see," she growled when River had stopped talking. Wolfram slunk forward beside River, the knife clenched in his fist. "Whether or not it would have killed me, it wouldn't have mattered. I would have destroyed the Inhuman's once and for all. I would have won either way." She was pacing restlessly now, tail lashing. But Wolfram saw her hand was now on her hip where her gun was held.
"And another thing you are sadly wrong about, dear River, is that I still have won. How? My men out number you by hundreds. We are taking your group down one by one, and sooner or later you will all be dead." She lashed her hand toward the clearing, pausing to pin her stare on them both. "Inhuman's are pathetic—"
"But you're a Inhuman." Wolfram's voice was low; he was watching her through slitted pupils. "So was Michael. Neither of you are pathetic. What is your goal, exactly, Maple? Just to watch us burn?"
Mapleshade whipped her head around to look at him, her ears pinned to her skull. "Precisely."
Wolfram shook his head. "What I never understood," he muttered, shoving past River. "Is why. You're a Inhuman, and a lot of people you love, or shall I say loved, were Inhuman's. It makes no sense."
"Oh, I should have expected this. To much like your mother, not enough like your father. To smart and witty, brilliant instead of power-seeking."
"How dare you!" Wolfram's snarl seemed to scare Mapleshade enough for her to take a step back. "How dare you insult my mother like that! She was a genius, Mapleshade, she achieved so much more then you have, and ever will! I am proud to be like her. I would be disgusted even more with myself if I was like my father."
He glanced at River, and gave the ever so slightest tilt of his head toward Shadow. 'Go take him down,' he mouthed distinctly to her, before lunging at Mapleshade without a warning.
Brisa struggled to her feet and parted the makeshift shield around her when she heard River and Wolfram’s voices, followed by Mapleshade’s malicious hiss. Taylor dashed to Brisa's side, pulling her hurriedly to the middle of a group of battling Inhuman's. "We have to get into that fire ring somehow. The group. Mapleshade and that dude will kill Wolf and River in a millisecond. Ideas?"

Bleddyn had stubbornly trotted alongside Wolfram, but came to a halt when he continued straight for the ring of fire. "Woah, dude, I wouldn't..." Her eyes widened when he hurtled through the bellicose flames and completely disappeared from view. Honestly, I think I expected that. "Oh, never mind, then."
She gave the ultimate shrug and briefly looked around for an available foe before unintentionally encountering Taylor and Brisa. "Well, we could just, ya know, walk right in there like Mr. Dauntless did."
