«We Could Be Legends»

As Lachlan went to put a hand on Alec's shoulder, the boy recoiled violent. "I had one brother!" He spat, his voice high-pitched. "Shadow! And he's dead! And so is my mom and dad!" He fell back, his chest heaving as tears fell to the floor of the van, staining his pale cheeks.
His words didn't sound like a distressed, grieving seven year old. He sounded like someone much older. It was scary how adult he sounded. Maple and Michael's influence, perhaps?
He buried his face in his small hands, knees drawing up to his chest, shoulders shaking with silent sobs. "You're lying. You're lying."
"I'm sorry, about your brother and your... Parents." Lachlan said, watching with pity as the small boy curled up into a small, weeping ball. Mapleshade and Michael had to have screwed his head up, bad. "I'm not lying, Alec. I wouldn't do that about something like this. I'm not that kind of person. You and him had the same father."
He glanced outside of the car, eyes locking with River's, who had been listening to the entire conversation silently, adding everything up in her head. "I don't know what to do." He mouthed to her with a small shake of his head.
She jerked her head to tell him to move, and he obliged, allowing her to take his place beside Alec. "So, Alec,--" She murmured, eyes set directly in-front of her, trying to be non-threatening yet have a tough and authoritative appearance. Maybe he'd respond good to that, seeing as who his parents were. "--I'd say something gushy about how it's gonna be okay, but I don't think you want or need that right now." She said silkily, pushing some hair out of her face, not even thinking as her scars were revealed.

Toby hadn’t paid attention to the people sitting behind him. In fact, he was spacing out so he didn’t even know people were in the car with him. That is, until a little boy started screaming that Shadow, who was apparently his brother, was dead, along with the rest of his family.
Toby’s stomach twisted into a sickening knot, and he slowly turned around to look behind him, his eyes wide. By the look of it, the boy couldn’t have been older than eight, yet he sounded surprisingly mature, almost like a military soldier, programmed to act professional no matter what. Whatever the reason, Toby found it utterly terrifying.
Shadow. That was the kid I- I-
His gaze flicked to the person next to Alec. Of course it had to be Lily. His gaze went back to Alec. “I-I’m so sorry,” Toby said, the feeling of impending doom growing stronger.
Alpha pawed Toby’s leg, but Toby shoved him off, staggering out of the van, grabbing his backpack and swinging the very heavy bag over his shoulder, ignoring the pain as he did so.
He pulled off his now-useless glasses and shoved them into the pocket of his hoodie, stumbling away from the van and everyone else. I killed his brother. It’s all my fault. I’m a monster. Please, let me go back and change it.
Indigo crouched beside Toby, because that was the only reasonable way to get to his level.
"It's not your fault, Toby," she said. Indigo looked down at the boy, eyes full of sympathy. Her face had a natural, comforting sheen. She crouched beside the boy.
“So you miss your family? You must have loved them a lot. Tell me about them. What made your family special to you?” Children responded well to questions after losing someone, recalling events with their loved ones.

Alec looked up quickly, his sobs silencing at River's voice. He blinked away his tears quickly, wiping a sleeve across his cheeks. He nodded slightly at River's words. "Do I...do I really have a brother?" He asked quietly, forcing the tremor from his voice. Dad wouldn't like that, he reprimanded himself quickly. But..... Dad's not here.

A broad smile filled her face when she saw that Peter had woken up. She didn't think it was anything she had done, but hopefully it meant he was going to be ok. Things were starting to look better compared to how they were just a little while ago.

Alice grinned at Crow, and gently wrapped her cold hand around his hot wrist. The bone slowly knit itself back together popping as it moved around. Healing all these people at once was extremely satisfying. To this point the only people she'd healed, were herself and Dyn. Or, maybe not. Since everyone seemed to know what her powers were now. What happened? What had she forgotten? Alice bit at her lower lip as she silently healed Crows arm. Was there anyway she could find out without making people worry about her?
Alice's attention was drawn back to the van. Recognizing the same words she'd shrieked to her sister not long ago. Camilla. Our parents are gone? And I... She looked back at Crows arm trying to concentrate. Whether they were gone or not, there were other people who needed help. She had to stay here, in the present, not letting her mind wander to what might have happened. What probably happened. Everyone else believed it. But she couldn't. Not right now.

"All better?" She asked letting go of him. She didn't look up. She couldn't.
Crow gave her a small smile, moving his arm to demonstrate that it was healed. "Yes, thanks, Alice." He said, "Didn't know you had healing powers.." he muttered to himself. Then, noticing the weird look in her eyes, he asked his own question. "Are you okay?" He said, concern in his voice. He cocked his head slightly, a habit from being a crow for so long.

River slowly turned her head down to look at the boy, who was dwarfed by her. Her blue eyes were sharp, but manifested some warmness within their icy blaze. "Yes. Technically, he's your older half brother. You two share a father. He's about eighteen now, and his name is Wolfram." She paused, cocking her head at Alec, ears twitching slightly. "Do you have any questions about anything? I can try to clear some things up for you. Try."

While she smiled, Bleddyn was going through everything Wolfram had done for her.

He’d carried her, unconscious, all the way home after their first Pure confrontation.
He’d pulled Mapleshade’s knife out of her leg and talked her back to sanity in that van.
He’d dragged her out of the underground catacombs.
He’d taken a knife meant for her in the following fight.
He’d bargained with Mapleshade for her life.
He’d signed for her to be treated in the Multitude’s healing center.
He’d complimented her in that s t u p i d sweater.
He'd argued with her over the speed of pizza consumption.
He’d punched her in the face when she goaded him into it.
He’d consoled her in the Davis's kitchen when they realized they’d lost Tayn and Thomas.
He’d driven her to school, despite the looming threat her father had posed.
He’d opened up to her in the bank’s parking lot.
He’d tracked her father down when he disappeared beneath the rubble.
He’d held her after she’d killed her father with a power she would’ve died to have.
He’d gone down with her into the abyss she created.
He’d pulled her out when she wanted her father’s grave to be hers.
He’d tried to stop her from returning to the fight, albeit like a moron.
He’d torn Mapleshade’s fatal attention away from her in the ring of fire.
And this. Right now.

In fact, of spite of what she’d sworn earlier, maybe life debts shouldn’t be forgotten.

Before she could overthink this, Bleddyn surged up on her toes.
She kissed his cheek, right on a bruise’s shiny center.
When she pulled away, the spicy tangs of both sweat and blood had her lips tingling.
“Think so.“
Then she took off like the word fatigue wasn’t in her dictionary.
Wolfram's eyes became as round as saucers the moment he realized what the heck had just happened, several moments after she had vanished from sight. A nervous laugh escaped his throat after he recovered from the initially shock, glancing towards the direction she had just went. So...that just happened.
Why
that had just happened, he didn't know. What had encouraged her to do that, he didn't know. But he wasn't complaining.
After several moments, he finally shifted trotting back towards the van, hoping she had at least went back and not just vanished. It took all of him not to bounce like a child. For all the destruction and terror around him, all of the horrible things that had happened, it had raised his spirits just the slightest bit.
When he approached the van, he instantly shifter back. "Lachlan, gue—" He stopped as he came up to them, seeing River crouching in front of Alec. He glanced at Lachlan. "...is everything okay?"

Alec watched her speak with quiet interest. The woman reminded him of his mother, kind in her own way that wasn't quite so obvious to others. I have a brother.
Then he heard the name. The name his mother had spat so many times with disgust. The name he had heard discussed over and over while his parents talking never knowing he was hiding there in his small panther form. The one person his mother seemed to hate, even more then Silver.
"Wolfram?" His voice didn't waver this time, instead it took on a very cold tone. He ignored her question, never once blinking. "Wolfram is my half brother?!"

Alice looked up with tears she'd been trying to hide standing in her eyes. "You didn't know?" She asked, using the heel of her hand to quickly wipe her eyes dry. "I'm-" She looked to the side, trying to determine just what she was. "I don't know. I'm fine I guess." She said, shrugging and wrapping her hands around her elbows. "I just don't know how we got here."

Lachlan whirled around to face him. "Thank God, you're back." He sighed, glancing at River and Alec. "So I went to see who that kid was, asked his named. Apparently it's Alec. But he asked me where his mom was. I asked him who she was." He shook his head. "Wolf, it's Mapleshade! He's her son. And that boy, that Toby shot? The one who Mom said killed Sherri? That was his brother. Mapleshade had two sons." He paused, turning back to Wolfram, looking into his sky blue eyes with his grassy ones, wondering how his friend would react to learning that he had brothers-- One being already dead.
"Wolf, I asked who their father was. He said it was Michael. He's got your brother."

Toby shook his head, squeezing his eyes shut. “But it is. That kid doesn’t have a brother anymore, because of me. How is that not my fault?” Toby asked, opening his eyes to look at her. He was surprised he could actually see her face without breaking his neck. Like always, he didn’t look at her for long and dropped his gaze to the ground.
