I need opinions... 1 or 2 doors on the front of a quail cage? Ideal dimensions for the doorway?
The cages I'm building are 4ft wide. I want to be able to reach everywhere in the cage, but I don't want a huge opening. I was going to put two doors in the front of each cage, but now I'm thinking catching birds will become a nightmare - I'll reach into the right side and they'll go to the left and vice versa. Perhaps a long, narrow door to minimize the area of the opening while improving my ability to reach everywhere from one opening? Thoughts?

My coop is 6' long with one door (about 20" wide?) in the middle front. I've been able to catch all of the quail through that, but the roof of my hutch also has hinges and lifts up. There is hardware cloth underneath with two lift up flaps covering holes in the hardware cloth. I use those openings for gathering eggs, though they are large enough to pick up quail through as well.

One of my cages is like that and its always a pain. i have to get people to help me catch birds as they do exactly what your describing. I dont often have to pull them out of that cage so its not that big of a deal. The pvc one thats 7 ft long only has 1 door but its much easier as from the center i can reach everything.

We raise them as dual purpose, so the will will come when I need to catch them. We also are going to start selective breeding in small groups of 3 hens and 1 cock, so that means catching prospective mates from the larger coveys quite often also.
I kind of like the idea of a single door in the center. I started doing some real thinking now... The problem is that a 12" door in the center would mean I (or DW) need to reach 30" into the cage to reach either back corner (some basic geometry: 12" center door means 18" on each side to make the total 48" length. The cage is 24" deep. 18^2+24^2=900 => sqrt(900)=30). I don't want to have to reach 30" into the cage... I would have to go as far as a 24" wide door to have a reach just under 27". That seems really wide though... might as well have two 12" doors next to each other like french doors. That would allow a 24" opening if we opened both.

I have a 4'x4' brooder. I found that this works very well for catching whatever is in the brooder. I suspect that it would work good for reaching into a cage to catch quail. There are other similar models that are even less expensive but the linked one is the one that I use.

Can you add a temporary divider to use for grabbing quail? That way the quail are stuck one side or the other and you can grab them. Then when you don't need to grab them you can have the full size of the cage?

that’s the similar design I’m going for with button cage....trying to figure out a divider to push them into for cleaning the cage.

I think I need to get something like this to catch some of my chickens :lau

Most of them are pretty easy to catch but the EEs are super smart and fast and when they don’t want to come in, they won’t. They also seem to know when I am trying to bribe or catch them and won’t approach and/will go into a stand off with me

Yet when I’m not trying to catch them, they come running. So I know it’s not that they’re scared lol

They just say “Nope. Not ready to go home yet. Having too much fun out here”

Thankfully the one I recently learned I can get her to go in with some scratch but she can’t be led there, have to toss it in the run and wait for her to go in.

And the chicks don’t fully trust me or come running to me yet like the bigs so it’s worse with them ha but the others are coming around. But once again, the EE is troublemaker. :lau

Anyway, I need a dang net. Get sick of chasing them, waiting them out, and/or playing cat and mouse for a half hour :lau
