➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Out of the 10 myshire jumbo males, one was terrible. Scalped another male. Crowed loudly and continuously. Mated everyone. He went to solitary and worried the walls off the cage. Flighty, jumpy and aggressive.

The 3 males in with the females crow rarely. Candle tonight to see fertility for QB#7.

Is it possible this is a sex linked trait? The Lucky quail (QB#1&2) is giving white females and mostly wild type males. QB#3 had the 2 pied females with wild male. The A&M dot on the head and a large dot lower on the body. QB#5 female looks like an A&M. Waiting to confirm, but her brother is male with white slash on his breast. He makes 8 weeks next week and they aren't fighting. I know, proves nothing.

Just an observation that I thought was unique. White females and wild males.

22 babies poop too much.:sick:sick

I'm going to run out of paper towels quick this time.

Not for much longer! They're finally big enough to eat.

That’s awesome!! So you got them for food and not tick control then? Or they just got annoying? Haha

I'm also trying to streamline my chicken groups down to three: Leghorns, Chanteclers, and mixed bantams. Right now I have quite a few random birds that take up space without being part of any breeding program.

That’s awesome!! That makes total sense!! I am sure if I was trying to breed I would do the same thing haha

Well, actually, I’m a wimp and would probably just rehome them

@Texas Kiki I use Pampers mats/underpads.. not sure how you guys call these. I lay them on the brooder floor, then some wood shavings and it is very easy to clean. Just fold the whole mat with the shavings and put a new one. Literally a 2 min job.
I hate shavings more than I hate poop.

I just use paper towels and it's really easy to change I'm just so over changing it 10 times a day already.

A neighbour gave them to me. I never wanted them in the first place.
I'd rehome if I wasn't dealing with a new respiratory issue of unknown origin. As it is, I've stopped selling birds or eggs until I can get a handle on the situation.

My guineas. Also, Natasha, because he's adorable and I spam everyone with pictures of him every chance I get.

Make sure your shears are SHARP.
They are. I want to make sure that everything is as quick as possible. The roommate was surprised at how quick I was. I've been psyching myself up to this since they hatched, knowing it was coming, so there was no hesitation once the shears were applied. Then I grabbed the next one, repeated, then the last one. I did the cleaning after all of the beheading was done.

I admit that I was skimming some of the posts, so I didn't catch the whole conversation, but are you supposed to wait a couple of days after butchering to eat or freeze them? If so, I've made a mistake since two are already in the freezer. I haven't eaten the first one yet.

I freeze them immediately when I don't have fridge space, but resting them in the fridge for a day or so helps make them more tender. I also like to brine them.

Ahh okay. Makes sense then lol bet they’ll be tasty!!

And that sucks! I hope you can figure it out!! :fl

Although that said, btw, for the record, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with culling them, just that I don’t think I could lol

But it is food. :)
