➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

So, ... I cleaned the brooders (three this time 🙈) and took the chance to shoot some pics ... and document the colors.

Group 1 (43 chicks - exebition birds)

Brooder 2 (28 chicks - Mix)

Brooder 3 (13 chicks - Celadon Splitter HG)

A bit disapointed, as there are much to many Pharaohs. Of course it is impossible to avoid off-colors, but the ratio is terrible 🤬

I am quite staggered, because last time, I hatched from the same breeder it was a 100% percision landing on colors

Holy ... just relized that I may be mistaken...
...the cardboard box aren't my brooders... just temporary to clean the brooders 🙈

These are my brooders:

Alright guys, today is the “official” hatch day. I woke up to 7 chicks in the incubator, 1 has hatched, 2 are in the process of zipping. (So 10 total so far) plus multiple more have external pips. I did help one that is zipping, because it’s been zipping since last night (was about half way zipped around), so I waited until around 11 hours but it wasn’t making progress even though it was pecking and pecking and the membrane looked dry. I was right, membrane was stuck to him all around the back! Even with humidity in the 65-75 range. So I removed a bit more shell and moistened the membrane and put him back and he is pushing and pushing to get out. I don’t want to help unless it’s a last resort, but I also don’t want to let it die when I know it’s in trouble. If it hatches too weak then I will cull but at least I gave it a chance. I also have one that pipped on the wrong side, I see a bit of bloody membrane and his beak is free and can breathe so I’m just leaving it be and I’ll reassess tonight.

I heard one of my week old chicks crow yesterday while I was getting weights. 😐

No more hatches until fall due to vacay and hot weather. I got 21 out of 50 from this last hatch. Seems like the 25 SSCs from KC were less successful than the Tibetan Tux order. But I got enough to start. Rather not have the weak ones hatch anyway.

My other half has proclaimed "no more" - not sure how he'll feel about the 86 egg order I've already paid for and postponed until Sept. Hopefully we'll have some processed by then and he'll feel better. How many is too many, anyway? I don't even have 60 yet.

How many licks to get to the center of a tootsie roll lollipop?

How many cages/coops/containers do you have? And can you properly care for them all?

Most I've had was 84 quail. Small pickings compared to some around here.
Exactly!

I've got a triple stack hutch for my breeding experiments or if I need to do tests to determine genetic background. Each hutch is 2x4'. I then have a rehabbed chicken coop that is a part of the barn with one part 10x10' (and I go in and hang out with them and listen to my podcast because man, they are so relaxing!) and a second part of the coop (the old "roosting" area) 4x10' - this area I have taken the old roosting boxes (at least the ones on the ground level) and turned them into sandboxes for them.

I've found them super easy to care for! My ultimate plan was to just keep the top ten percent or so (that would only be 5! I was thinking around 30 keepers) for breeding/eggs and eat the others.

😂😂😂

Think I somehow did perfect math with my quail without trying... I have 2 males and the rest are female! Bother of the males love crowing and I love the sound of it.

We are building some quail cages for the grow outs during the 4 day weekend that we have. Hoping to get at least 3 done and put them in their semi permanent spot so that they are ready for the SCC and the Rosetta.
