➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

That's amazing @BullChick !

Sorry I disappeared guys. My first chick immediately found a new and inventive way to murder itself. It's only my second hatch in this incubator and I missed a spot where the stupid things could get wedged. It wasn't even the egg rotating tray, I had already taken that out directly after that picture was taken, it was the hatching mat! I've fixed it. Anyways, twas kind of a major bummer. Mostly just guilt-cried until the next ones came along :hit

I got four more overnight, and another eight or so have externally pipped. I'm expecting a really staggered hatch because of the split incubators. Good test though, one set obviously pipping earlier/more aggressively. Will up the temp slightly on the other for next batch.

I have to run to the feed store this morning (no doubt they will all pop out while I'm gone) and then somehow finish my essay while on hatch watch

This has been a stressful quail week :( But I will take pics of new babies when I get back.
:hugs

Thank you guys.

Awe that little pearl? Did you lose him? I’m so sorry he was so cute :(

I did, and it was my own stupid fault. I'm such a weenie farmer, I'm still so upset:hit I think I am doomed to lose a chick every conceivable way until I have learned sufficient lessons  I do sometimes rue *starting* with quail, they are so dumb and fragile...

BUT I do have six happy chicks, two more zippering, another 4 or 5 pipping that I can see. One of my homebreds pipped and died, and another has pipped the wrong end (still kicking), but the shipped eggs are actually hatching beautifully.

Thank you guys.

I was devastated a few days ago, and felt like everything was my fault. While I could have possibly prevented the outcome, the chicks that died were actually the weak ones. I know that for sure because the remaining ones are so quiet.
We all lose our poultry in dumb ways. No matter how many times it takes, we need to learn what we can, and move on.

First three into the brooder! They had to do a quick puppy pile until they warmed up and noticed the snacks. Now they are scootching farther and farther away from the heat and spread out so not too chilly.
