➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

I think this is my nicest bird from my first hatch of the year. F2 homebred and a full sibling of my 6 charcoal chicks from the two batches. He is the biggest chick in the group.

Younger charcoal sibling group - a few are twice as big as all of the other chicks!

Rainbow babies - far left is a keeper

And a few other misc. The two in the upper right are siblings from my little charcoal rosetta marbled roo - they're weird!

They are all reserved for a trade (I need every feather-sexable pullet I can get for it) but I have their pretty mommas still. It's a pretty common color around here but I am experimenting with different combinations. I am planning new breeding groups based on my results from the past few hatches now and I think my nicest italian female is going in with my charcoal roo next.

Interestingly, only 1-2 of these chicks *came* from a golden italian, so I have no idea what they actually are or if they'll change much.

In other news, I am about to throw my first three harvested birds in the oven with their honey-mustard-soy-lime-Worcestershire-sesame oil glaze :drool I am so excited.

When I grow up I think I am going to be just like you with playing around with colors.

Enjoy those boys!

Oh my god they were so friggin' good. So much better than the frozen. Like a combination of turkey and duck but juicier than either. Oh I'm so happy. Not going to get sick of those anytime soon.

I think leaving the skin on was worth it. Yes, there were some teeny weeny little hair-like feathers I definitely missed, but no, I did not notice them while eating. And if I cared I could have torched them off first. The skin was SO flavorful, tasted like butter.
