➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Hey everybody! I haven't been on here in over a week, maybe even two weeks. I've been crazy busy, mostly at work but some home and family things too. I finally have a few minutes to hop on here. I hope everybody's birds are doing well. Ours have gotten pretty big. I go out off town next week, and then intend to cull the flock (culling makes mostly for the freezer) when I get back. They'll be 8 weeks on 3/13. I will be back on here a bit more again. Hoping to get my incubator up and running soon with a few turkey eggs.

Another question......:old:idunno

Do quail need something to bathe in? I don’t have anything like that set up right now. And how often do they get mites/lice?
They don't 'need' a bath but they do enjoy bathing, especially in the sun. I have never had a problem with lice, mites or worms. And have had only a few illnesses in all the years I have raised birds.
The only problem i have ever had with mine was years ago, when I was commercially raising quail. Ulcerative enteritis nearly wiped my operation out.
If you have a strict biosecurity program, most hygiene and illnesses can be avoided.
If you feel you need to provide them a bath, then a box of dirt or sand will suffice.

Quail waterers worked great for me. They use the quart sized jars and have a small base so they can't drown.

Except they knock them over :barnie

Anybody try a covered dusg bath for quail? Mine make a mess of the dirt. I was thinking about something like a covered litter box but shorter to fit in my cages. Just looking for a way to contain the "dust" material.

Mine wont go "in/under" anything.

I’m excited! I’m getting a glass door mini fridge this weekend to make my own incubator! Hopefully with the help of another BYCer with more engineering skill than me, I can make a nice cabinet incubator.

The Hubs is pretty savvy but he’s going to be on active duty for the Navy the rest of March so I have to nag someone else.:gig

I have a 4 gallon square bucket, cut 3" diameter holes in it and put sand. They are eating the sand. Hoping in dries out this year. It didn't dry very fast in the bag. The bucket should be better.

Some use the 1 gallon planter as a bedroom. On it's side in the corner.

Last night I went out and all were spread out in the open section sleeping. No huddle. Been terrible cold here. Made it into the 30°s!! :th

I made mine a “bathhouse”- wooden cabinet with a mesh top for ventilation, hinged door for me and two little arched openings for them so nobody blocks the way in or out. I was so sure I had vanquished all of the sand scattering. Heh. Now every time they finish their sand dance they come out of the sand box and shake off in the main area. :barnie

You obviously need to train them better. :lau

I keep explaining to the chickens why they should only eat the bugs out of the garden. They were still peckish and said they like salads with the bugs. They got banished.
