➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Oh I'm sorry Muddy :hit that's the worst feeling ever :hit
he had a wound up piece of shell on foot stuck to another egg ??? never seen anything like it. I swore I wouldn’t open bator for any reason but reached and grabbed him out and removed it. will see how foot responds now that “ball and chain” is gone. :fl I didn’t hurt any of the others!! 13 out before i did it

Got some sleep, just checked ‘bator and no new chicks or pips...solo chick is still pretty wet though...it’s been 4 hours since hatch; how long does it take to dry? It’s 100 degrees and 65% humidity inside the incubator if that makes a difference.
Yes, perfect sense. The higher the humidity the longer it takes to 'fluff up'!

And the first pip (that I can see) JUST happened! Guess I won’t be sleeping tonight...hopefully my face pressed up against the plastic incubator window doesn’t traumatize the hatchlings. ;)
Go to sleep ..they don't hatch for a long time after they first pip.
Like 24 hours long.

Went from a pip to chick in no time flat! First little bumble bee has hatched. Pipped around 9:45pm (pacific) and fully hatched just before 12:30am.

Now I’m paranoid about it getting into the container I have in the incubator that is filled with a washcloth and some water (for humidity)...container has pretty tall sides (compared to chick), it’s the lid to a butter dish and washcloth is folded in a way so that it spans the length of the lid. Water is only half full (so washcloth is above water level) but washcloth is saturated. I’m hoping these little buggers are so exhausted after hatching that they don’t start their hopping for at least a few hours...don’t want the poor thing to drown if/when I fall asleep!
:lau:oops:

If I am remembering correctly, you had your best hatch when you weren't home to mess with them.
No sir.
That was just the largest eggs set hatch.
I have only had one chick that hatched and died and that first pipper that died in shell.
