The belties are so cute! I wanted mini Highlands, but they’re really hard to source around here and really expensive. Regular highlands seem to be pretty small anyway (unless they’re mixed with bigger breeds), so I’m okay with their size. You can milk the Belties, you know. Unless you need a lot of milk. Beef cattle (like highlands) tend to give naturally homogenized milk like goats, but it can be separated with a separator, too. People love their goats, tho. They’re just harder to fence. That’s why I decided on cows.

I love that you’re doing your own meat. That’s my goal, too. DH says I’ll never slaughter any of my animals... I’m afraid he’s gonna think I’m a bad person when he finds out... I’ve got Red Rangers coming in a week or two (got to check!) The cows are safe, tho... they’re my breeders. Except for the mean one (not in the pic).

People charge highway robbery prices for the mini highlanders Mini belties, dexters, and lowline angus/american auberdeen seem way, way easier to get and cheaper all over here.

I think yours are perfect. Although I bet the mean one is a handful and you wish he were smaller, LOL.

The mean one is a little runt girl with a Napoleon complex. DH did say I should stop at two. I wanted her because of her size, but she just bullies the white one (who was a bottle calf, very gentle, and my favorite). If she’s not pregnant I’m going to make steaks of her at the beginning of the cold weather next fall/winter. (I only got them last September... I waited too, too long. Should have done it decades ago.)

What kinda bator did you get?

I have a hovabator and a little giant I believe. I can put 230 eggs in it.

We want quail for training our hunting dogs. And a lot of our friends dogs. I think quail are tasty also. So the males will probably go in my freezer.

My cayuga is sitting on 23 eggs..... the others were contributing to her nest before I blocked them out. Hopefully not all of them will be viable because I don’t have that much space for them. Or I’ll be giving some away! She’s the best Momma. She gets super pissy when anyone even looks at her babies.

Hey, I’m really wanting to get some Harlequins and some Muskovies. It seems like people either love ducks or hate them. I guess they’re pretty messy, but otherwise, I’m not sure why the big divide... What is it about ducks that makes you enjoy them (or not)? And maybe my “brand selection” is misguided... why Cayugas?
