➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

I don’t have ducks yet, but my mom had some when I was very little. Alas, the neighbors dog decapitated them. :hit
Someday I will get my own, when things are a little less hectic so I can spend time with them and really enjoy them. And clean up after them :p. And I’m totally looking into getting Welsh Harlequin too! They’re so pretty! and they’re supposed to be more calm than some.

Curses! I have mistimed my hatch again! :barnie I never know far enough in advance exactly when we will be out of town and for how long.

If you had to, would you start lockdown a day or two early, or a day or two late?

I would just bring the incubator with me and run it off the car inverter but I already somehow have to fit us, the dog, our luggage, and 13 rabbits in the car this trip.

Hellooooo world of quail!

I posted a kind of desperate flailing thread the other night and have not gotten enough info. Thus I was directed here....A bit of background on my location: approx. 3400-3500ft elevation, western slope of Sierra Nevadas (El Dorado County, CA), and it has been phenomenally wet this year.

I am in desperate need of knowledge broaching the topic of hatching and brooding quail, specifically in a DIY fashion.
I'm making an incubator from an ice chest: wondering which kind of thermostat/hygrometer I should get and how many vent holes I should put in it
Secondly should I start small with a brooder and transition to a larger one as the babies grow? I was thinking a heated brooder plate that is adjustable to keep them warm? Do I want to use bedding in a brooder or just have hardware cloth floors?

Any and all input is much appreciated :bow

@CayugaJana
Aww! She’s soooo sweet!

Hey, I’m really wanting to get some Harlequins and some Muskovies. It seems like people either love ducks or hate them. I guess they’re pretty messy, but otherwise, I’m not sure why the big divide... What is it about ducks that makes you enjoy them (or not:p)? And maybe my “brand selection” is misguided... why Cayugas?
I originally got Cayugas for several reasons collectively. 1) I wanted the boys to enter some animal in the fair but at the time we didn’t have room for cows. 2) Cayugas weren’t as common at the fair 3) They are supposed to lay a few more eggs than welsh’s 4)Large enough breed for butchering 5) Calm disposition and friendly 6) And decent mothers 7)They are relatively quiet

I contemplated welsh harlequins as they are beautiful but I thought the cayugas were slightly prettier and the WH lay just a few less eggs and we couldn’t get both breeds. But I’ve wanted to get the WH so bad! I think you will love the WHs once you get them.

Welcome! I can’t answer your incubator questions as I haven’t attempted diy yet, but we have a lot of resident experts here that I’m sure will be happy to help! As for brooding, I don’t recommend heat plate as my 1 time using it for quail, I lost about half my hatch! Heat pad and/or lights (most here like ceramic reptile bulbs) work much better. Baby quail are dumb and will always find new and inventive ways to murder themselves! Myshire farm has great you tube videos to help you also to avoid some of the quail brooding pitfalls!

With out a doubt I would start it early.

I can't help with anything about elevation....I am at sea level.
Bator build info:
Building the BinBator

I think a couple of dirt boxes in the cages, on wire, will work good.

I've read that thread and another, they're rather general as to temp/humidity monitoring. And I was just wondering if there are any tricks with quail incubating
