➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

@Jpat what was the thermostat you used that’s great and cheap?

I don’t add any water until lockdown. If I do, their air cells stay the same size. I also incubate in my walk in closet because it’s the only room that doesn’t have windows or vents in it.

Listen to this YouTube video. As a newbie myself I’ve found all 5 of these are really accurate. You can’t use traditional waterers without any adjustments or some will inevitably drown. They get cold really really easy so never put cold water from the tap. It causes them to pile up on each other and they smother the one on the bottom. If they are chirping loud, it’s normally because something is wrong and you need to go check on them. If they are quiet, they are content. Small crumble feed only. No pellets for babies. I use a red light heat lamp. And I don’t turn on any regular lights. I found if I did, they picked at each other too much. They even picked ones intestines out. It was horrible. If they are picking, give them more space, cool them down, and turn off regular lights.

I second this.

This is what I plan on using as supplies minus the ice chest. I’m going to use a mini fridge.

A6D9170E-3947-4D50-85AA-7EEE3BEAF874.jpeg we’re home.....hubby covered the outdoor hutch with HW cloth so we could open both levels as the 2 week olds were getting a bit cramped just in the top. I made a feed run tonight but it started raining and got dark so i’m waiting until morning to do another check and fill the feeders. I’m on strict orders from the hubby to NOT get any more eggs without his permission!!! and i’ve been trying to refresh my memory on small animal care as my 19 year old brought home a guinea pig today!! she’s adorable but i hadn’t really planned for another housepet!! my son is now concerned that she really needs a friend but hubby and I are concerned that she may be pregnant as the friend that gave it to him did not have them separated by gender!! anyone here have any experience?? :barnie

AKA me, but @Sara L is about to (hopefully) hatch out some eggs from me, proving it's not affecting things too negatively (I mean, again, hopefully, but they were all developing at first check :fl), even with the ~5500 ft elevation change down to get to her.
Candled on wed night when locked down the turkey eggs. They looked good then. I will be locking them down after dinner, I'm hoping they will hatch Sunday. :D

I have no clue on the fan, my brother wired it. I will ask when my boyfriend rewires it this month.
Thanks!

link for the video? Any recommendations on feed? I'm hoping to give them a 4x3ft brooder in form of a converted dog crate

I use Swanson's turkey starter for my quail, I think it's around 25% protein. You will want a game bird or turkey feed, they need the higher protein and the minerals and nutrients needed are different too. Regular chick starter won't work well.

Make sure your brooder is suicide proof. They will find ways to kill themselves. They drown or get chilled easily, so they need to be kept out of the water dishes. They will squeeze into tiny openings and get stuck or squished. I use giant plastic totes for my brooders and waterers with the quail base, a tiny rim that's big enough to drink from but not big enough to step into. Heat lamps work better than an overhead heating pad, they don't seem to figure those out very well.

If you have a brooder that big (which will be great for when they're moody teenagers on up, you know, on day ~4 or so xD) I would just also have some sort of wall to corral them off into a cozy extra-warm corner for the first few days. They're not smart and don't put it past them to just wander away from the heat, get lost, and die if the whole setup is too big for the first couple of days when their poor little systems are still all coming online.

I candled last night....day 6 for quail, day 10 for chickens. looks like 6 clears for the quail so 24 developing. all 7 chicken eggs going strong! I took some video of the double yolker. now if i can figure out the whole upload thing!! It’s showing strong movement but I can only see one big chick. how does the second yolk affect the developing chick?? will it absorb all of it or does it pose a greater risk to the chick at hatch time?? i’m warming the 2nd bator back up now to set a few more frankenstein eggs for the HAL. since we took out the 2 cockerels last week, this may be my last fertile eggs for a couple months until new boys start getting their groove on! The EE boy from Christmas hatch is being a big bully already especially with my quail, so his days are numbered regardless of his size!! I will add the 30 sex-link on Tuesday night. It will be a bit cramped again for the first week while I wait for this batch to finish hatching.
