Ok I will try making some cages for them to see. I’m betting the mostly white one is a male based on how many feathers it still has. The females I can tell are trying to hide. Has anyone tried a habitat that helps the females stay safe from the males if they want?

we built different size hideaways out of flower pots and appears that girls use them more than the boys do. i’ve seen some using guinea pig/small animal hideaways as well that may work better in a cage environment. 3AA60DE4-3AF9-4181-A4C0-2438A8290D67.jpeg

Styrofoam bators are notorious for alot of things....among those things, having air straification, meaning there are pockets in the bator that may be warmer or cooler from where the temperature sensor is located in the bator. This is why it is recommended to use several calibrated thermometers in the bator.
As suggested, moving the eggs around to different locations in the bator, will hopefully even out the fluctuations in the egg core temperature.
When I set my foam bators up to incubate, I place 5 thermometers in the bator, 1 in each corner and 1 in the middle. That way I know where the cooler or warmer 'spots' are in the bator. The thermometers I use are the antique mercury incubator thermometers, they are highly accurate.

I usually 'cut off' the hatch 2 days past the last chick that hatches. As stated, moving the eggs around to different locations will help insure that the majority of the eggs will hatch on time, if there is stratification of the air in the bator.
Thanks! Will give it a try and see how the future hatches go! :)

I have a baby!!! :jumpy

It's so hard to see any pips on these eggs. I was thinking they should hatch late tonight or tomorrow. I was thinking a bit later even since they got cooled over night last week.

YAY! CONGRATS! :jumpy

Um. I have the most stuck quail chick I've ever encountered. Literally just encased and fused to the egg. Others still hatching fine. What do I do?! Vaseline is not doing the trick.

Vaseline will grease things up but it will not loosen the dried membrane stuck to the chick. I have found that using a paper towel wet with 100°F water gently applied will moisten the dried membrane which then can be pulled away from the chick.
