➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Had to bring one of my roos in... I guess the hens decided they were not in mood for male company or that there was one too many warm bodies in the group. Ambient temp has been around 80F and I found him when I went to refresh water and sand to cool them off (after being fine in morning bird check).

He's a little lethargic side, but hopefully rest and AC will help him recover. Blood pooled in one eye, but the other looks pretty alert and bright.

Spray some vetrycin on it. He will probably be fine.

Oh no.

I hope he heals fast.

Egg shape has been proven that it is not effective with chicken eggs when trying to determine sex based on egg shape. It cannot be effective when using turkey or guinea eggs since all turkey and guinea eggs are pointy.

I suspect that it is not effective with quail eggs since all the pictures that I have seen of quail eggs have been round without any pointy ones.
I've read all those studies too, I'm just going to find out myself. Bobwhite eggs have a pointed end and a rounded end, so do Blues, Gambles, Valleys, not sure about Mountain quail haven't hatched any in a while can't remember. There so small it would be difficult to discern but they have to have a somewhat pointed end to be able to set them up right in the hatching tray.
I have a couple of ring necked hens that lay a nearly round egg everytime, it's impossible to set them correctly without candling first to find the air sac.
Maybe it's coincidence or chance that the ones I've marked have hatch out as marked? Time will tell but at the same time, I know and have always thought that it wasn't possible to sex them by egg shape, so it's kinda thrown a monkey wrench into my thinking and I just want to cure my curiosity once and for all.

Put 4 in.
Not just two. I bet four would fit in the two spots.
Could I perchance brood the chicks with the chicks? It would so much easier.

I was thinking wait 4 days, candle the chicken eggs and then, like @muddy75 suggested, time the hatches to pop at the same time. Wouldn't that be delicious? Like Gulliver among the Giants.

Sure! I have done ducklings and poults with chicks.
