➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

It's been decided. We harvest down to 5 layers this weekend, weather permitting. Then use the large quail coop for a chicken brooder in a month. Musical cages will be interesting. Planning on keeping the 5 largest hens and largest rooster. That should keep the eggs available. Didn't make 12 weeks, but 10 is close enough.

Chicken eggs on day 2. I did get a 1000 lumen light ordered. The 600 lumen on just doesn't cut it for the dark eggs.

Using same method as January's hatches, I'm sitting above 50% humidity. But no water drops it to 25 to 30%. Dry is looking good here in the swamps. Outside humidity is 80% and inside with AC is 70%.

Have 19 of the large Quail eggs set aside for Saturday's candling and tray filling. 2 per slot/cup/divot/hole/hallar spot in the turner. I could get more, but that would take more effort.
You are going to set 19!!!???:celebrate

My quail seem to all lay in the evening or during the night too.
Normally they don't lay durning night. They will lay at the very last seconds of light left in the day or at the very first hint of light in the morning. I say 'normally' cause there's always that one that will make a liar out of ya!:lau

I like how laid back my quail are. I cleaned the brooders out yesterday. The chickens all freaked out and acted like I was there to do murder, the quail refused to move and just looked at me as I scooped them up in the shovel with the soiled bedding. I thought these birds were supposed to be flighty? They seemed super happy with the fresh bedding too, while the other birds looked at all the clean stuff with suspicion.

Not what I said, dear.
I said I would fill the turner up AFTER pulling the clear chicken eggs on incubation day 4. I have 19 potential candidates. Unfortunately, until I get a better light, I really can't see the brown ones and even then I am skeptical. So by default they would all stay. Been researching and 4 day old spider veins are going to be difficult to observe even in the white/lighter colored eggs.

The quail eggs are coming in 2 different sizes. Big and not so big. Makes sense since I have 2 different sized hens. Picking out the big and scrambling the not so big.

I won't stagger the hatch. According to the prophecy, the jumbos arrive the 29th. :weeThat order will fill the incubator. Ya wanna split the order? Will your incubator be emptied? :lau

Point of order, your most Kikiness, if I start chicken eggs, then add quailies, does that count as 1 hatch or 2? I think it should count as 2. Goal was 5 hatches this year and the jumbos will be #5.

So you still only have two holes to fill?
I'm getting confused.

It counts as two.
And yes...I am ready for jumbo eggs.

Weeeee, the circus came to the pen, let's all go ride on the shovel throw! :lau

1. only 2 empty holes until the chicken clears are identified.
a. 19 big quail eggs sitting on the table as insurance
b. I hope I don't pull 20 chicken eggs, but I'll be ready since the quail are laying.
2. great - counting as 2 hatches. May exceed 5.
3. I'll PM you later in the month and you will have jumbos.
