➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

View attachment 1761146 View attachment 1761147 View attachment 1761148 One of these chicks is not like the others!! That’s little Hodor.....he found the other “hole” where the top board is over HW cloth now! He managed to get under the deck....it took us forever to coax him down to the gap to get him back on the right side!! He’s always been with quail but now that he can see the chickens, he’s really confused!!!
He's dumb. He likes his quail buddys.:love

i just think my girls are defective :lau still no eggs yet and the oldest were hatched Thanksgiving! well we (hopefully) found all the “holes” in the aviary today! 2 found gap between gate and backboard and escaped (1 was second timer escapee) 1 went in pool and drowned....it is in fridge for breakfast. the other flushed and flew full length of pool to top of roof and by the time we ran to front yard with the net it had disappeared without a trace!!! :hit
Chlorinated quail for breakfast... yum :gig
Truly sorry for your losses though. :hugs

The flyers were already on the chopping block Sunday! But this one got away first! The hawk that we’ve been seeing actually landed on the pole outside while we were working! He’s found us and getting way too brave! (After the escape) so I’m pretty sure if we don’t get lucky and find it in the morning, it’ll be hawk food! We may start clipping wings of any flyers we want to keep....it seems to be lighter colors (whites/silvers) and reds more than others.

Chlorine evaporates in 24 hours....so just prewashed hahaha.....while upsetting, I consider it part of the learning curve! More upset over the one that I’m not having for breakfast!!!! True houdinis they are!!!!

Finally I'm starting to see life.
I was beginning to think I set a whole bunch of duds again.

It's very hard to get what I see in a photo right now but I do see it.

I don't know what day I'm on.
I need to scroll back to find out.
I didn't start my hatch app or write it down.

Yes! How'd you guess.

I just set 23 eggs.
I couldn't wait one more day.

A few of them were taken out of the fridge.
I labeled them all so I can see what hatches when.
I set 23 on Monday and one on Tuesday.
So today makes it 72 hours since setting.

Quail Batch 1 laid at 11 weeks.
Quail Batch 2 laid at 9.5 weeks.
I'll say lighting. Mine have 30% Purina Game Bird chow since hatching.

Littler buggers are laying after dark now. Went out to put chickens to bed and pulled 1 chicken and 2 quail eggs. The chicken was on the nest at 6, so no surprise there.

My quail seem to all lay in the evening or during the night too.

It's been decided. We harvest down to 5 layers this weekend, weather permitting. Then use the large quail coop for a chicken brooder in a month. Musical cages will be interesting. Planning on keeping the 5 largest hens and largest rooster. That should keep the eggs available. Didn't make 12 weeks, but 10 is close enough.

Chicken eggs on day 2. I did get a 1000 lumen light ordered. The 600 lumen on just doesn't cut it for the dark eggs.

Using same method as January's hatches, I'm sitting above 50% humidity. But no water drops it to 25 to 30%. Dry is looking good here in the swamps. Outside humidity is 80% and inside with AC is 70%.

Have 19 of the large Quail eggs set aside for Saturday's candling and tray filling. 2 per slot/cup/divot/hole/hallar spot in the turner. I could get more, but that would take more effort.
