My sister and I raised a wild duckling when we were kids.. She was just a couple of days old when we got her and we just kept her in a cardboard box. Made a cosy little nest for her, but we had no additional heat and she survived. So I wouldn't worry about yours being too cold in the brooder. But it'll definitely be unhappy about being alone, so the bird rescue should be the best place for it (assuming mom doesn't turn up).

We found the nest—on the other side of our fence, right along the canal. Looks like she slipped into the yard through a low spot. Popped her into the water this morning and mama came right over to collect her with the other ducklings. All good!

Nine eggs are in the incubator. I don’t like horizontal turners as it is, but I really don’t like it for quail. I will be checking throughout the day to be sure they are laying in the right direction.
