The original group on one half and the babies in a sectioned off area I’m thinking of as an outdoor brooder. Planning to use deep litter/bedding. Decided there were just too many tree roots and too much washout during big rainstorms to do an aviary on the ground. The whole backyard is maybe 22x30 feet so not much to work with.

I have this super cool rabbit hutch that my dad built that is just sitting there empty. It's 8x4 and separated into two sides. I'll bet I could put some flooring down and use it for quail!

I love your cage. Did you build it?

My husband graciously did it for me. I worked up some sketches on graph paper and he built from there.

It is 3x10. I’m thinking of aiming for a laying covey of 15ish birds. I just did my first hatch of additional birds though and really enjoyed it. If I can find the time and deal with the butchering aspect I may hatch periodically and keep my favorites for laying/breeding.

I think you could definitely retrofit the rabbit hutch. If you wanted more light you could open the back some and install hardware cloth.
