He is like 8 or 9 now and almost killed a mountain lion a few weeks ago. Only had a few cuts his dad said

Oh wow!! That is impressive!! Is he sure he’s not mixed with Great Pyrenees or some other protective dog or LGD? :lau seems unusual for a Golden to be so fearless and vicious lol maybe he is just an amazing dog!!!

Nope just raised in the country and very protective. No livestock on his turf either. If you give a big dog a job they will do it lol.

Morning everybody!

Found 8 quail eggs yesterday. They started with 3 on Sunday and we are up to 8 already. WooHoo! I think I'm going to collect today and tomorrow and then set them in the incubator. I am just shocked at how fast they went from tiny peepers to egg laying machines.

Who on here keeps them overwinter in a colder climate? I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to manage this winter. Our winters are brutal. We have weeks of very negative temps and last winter we had insane amounts of snow. Will they freeze into little quailsickles if I keep them on the ground, but covered? Should I build another coop?

If you can cover the pen with polypropylene plastic tarp (like they use for green houses) they will be ok as long as they are dry and draft free. You could even add a heat lamp if you feel it's just too cold. Adding extra bedding in the sheltered area (hay/straw) will also help them to stay comfortable.
Feeding some scratch grains just before they go to roost will also help them keep their energy up during a cold night.
