➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

hubby wants me to get a better incubator if I intend to keep hatching. He wanted to get me the brinsea fully automatic for Christmas but fraud on my bank accounts kinda got in the way of Christmas surprises! I’ve been happy overall with my cheapie but he thinks the quality and timing of my hatches would be better with better quality bator.

Texas Kiki you need this, looks to be available in January

Kinda expensive! Sounds like they are beta testing to see if it's worth building an incubator with all the 'bells and whistles'.
Not necessarily a bad thing. I just don't think there could ever be a 'plug & play incubator, except a live hen. Just my

My salt test was off using the bag. Was dead on 75% in a sealed jar. Some bags are not air tight. Try the jar and see if it helps.
You are correct @H@tcher!! That's one of the 'things' most instructions and 'we' fail to communicate to someone trying to calibrate a hygrometer. I just assume that someone knows that you need an air tight container to place the hygrometer in....and yes, I know what ASSUME makes out U & ME ! :lau

I shall try the jar.

Pulled all 3 out and all dropped 10%. Warmer did not change the readings - but it should have. Hotter air has more carrying capacity for moisture.

To the jar.
You have to consider the surface area. With the small amount of surface area being used (in most applications) a bottle cap, the higher temp will actually drive off the moisture.
Just like when you read about someone filling up all the trays but the humidity doesn't rise, it's not the amount of water added but the surface area.
If the bottle cap is filled correctly, only enough drops to wet the salt and not a slurry, it should in theory provide the correct amount of moisture regardless of the temp of the container. Also need to take into account that the glass jar has more insulative qualities than a thin plastic bag.
This is one reason to calibrate it at room temp. Normally, 72°F

There's a bit of disharmony in my quail house today.. they are 5 weeks old.
Judging by feathers colorings.. I have 1 female.. and a lot of boys! And 2 white ones that are a lucky dip :lau

I think I've worked out who the trouble maker is.. (edit) and he has been removed from the others. Little bugger!

No surprise to you. Both hygrometers came up to 75% and are sitting there for 24+ hours in a jar. The Accururite was too large to fit through the large mouth on the gallon jar. Still reading low. I'll change the batteries later.

The salt was one lump. Added 3 drops water. Very likely too dry.

We've had very reliable power since the new wire and poles were installed. This spate of weather has led to many power interruptions. Brushed my teeth in the dark this morning.

Thank you for the help!
Cheers and wishing all a Happy New Year!
