I have 47 chicks and 1 adult quail at the moment. Plus my seven chicken hens. Quail are easy to keep in larger numbers. I am pretty sure I'll be able to put 100 lbs of quail meet in the freezer per year once we are breeding our own quail. We want to have 100 quail living at any point in time, culling and hatching to replace the culled numbers.

I just ordered some cute little quail scissors.. because.. I **need** them!!!

How are everyone's chicks going?
11 days old and doing great! ALL 47 OF 'EM. Starting to fly a bit. I'm worried they'll escape the brooder before the heat lamp is high enough for my to put a piece of HC across the opening in the top. The are already flying up to the top, just 3 more inches and they'll be out. :barnie

At 11 days old you should be able to put the HC across the top and have the lamp above the HC.

I would agree, except that we are getting some nasty arctic blast weather. On Wednesday it is supposed to get -16F with -40 wind chill. The brooder is in our sun room, which as a gas heater but is only insulated with 2" foam. It will stay warm enough in there, but the heat lamp is staying a bit low to ensure the chicks don't get a chill.

Ok, you know what's best for your situation. ;)
